Jefferson founded the Republican-Democrat Party that existed only during his years in the White House. After that, it broke apart, with some members becoming Democrats and others becoming Whigs. Jackson was the first Democrat President.
It is especially galling to read a report of Clinton (him or her) speaking at a dinner in honor of Jefferson. If she stands for anything at all (and it's doubtful she stands for more than just power for herself), she stands for the opposite of everything that Jefferson stood for.
