Why am I getting pop-ups
Posted on 04/28/2003 5:27:39 PM PDT by ru4liberty
FR (Latest Posts) is my home page, and I open 2 browsers whenever I start my day or whenever I shut down and start up again.
I have Panicware's Pop-Up Stopper Companion on my computer, but I have to turn it off to get the 2nd browser to launch. After I've launched both browsers and before I can turn Panicware back on, I GET A STINKING POP-UP AD!
I know FR doesn't do advertising, so where in the world are these ads coming from? Any ideas? Anyone else having this problem?
HELP!

Great information. Now how about all these dang penis enlargement ads I'm getting in my e-mail? Did I bump into a site that I shouldn't have? It's like computer herpes, the creeping crud just keeps coming back. Are they trying to tell me something? ;-)

Consider yourself lucky that those ads are ONLY in your email!
Mine take over the computer! Nice, real nice.

Thank you for your advice. I was having a truly terrible time with self-launching pop-up windows (and I had over 47,000 cookies, even though I visit very few sites.).
I downloaded Spybot -- and voila! The problems are gone! I cannot believe it.
THANK YOU!

You're most welcome. I should give the credit to some freeper (I can't recall whom) that started a thread regarding spyware, Adaware, and Spybot a few months ago. I had been running Adaware from time to time, and because he warned on that thread that Adaware wasn't being updated and Spybot was better, I changed to Spybot.
Running Spybot for the first time was a real eye-opener for me, too!
