FReep California Republican Party Spokesperson

Despite Overwhelming Vote in Support of Recall - Republican Party Spokesman Makes Disparaging Comments on Recall Gray Davis Effort

Help make sure that some of the political operatives in Sacramento who don’t understand a grassroots efforts don’t smear our good deeds in the news media. Today, Rob Stutzman who serves as a spokesman for the California Republican Party, made the following comments about the recall effort:

“So far it appears to be failing… They have not raised the necessary dollars to qualify the recall. The Internet appears to be yielding tens of thousands, not hundreds of thousands of signatures. The Republican Party is still waiting for a broader-based coalition to materialize that we think is necessary for the recall to succeed.”

What is remarkable about Mr. Stutzman’s comments is that these come after the delegates to the California Republican Party state convention voted overwhelmingly in March to endorse the recall effort. This followed a similar endorsement by both the Libertarian and American Independent parties. The Green Party is considering an endorsement of the recall effort on May 4th.

Mr. Stutzman is apparently acting out of line and misrepresenting the views of the majority of California Republican Party members.

We ask that registered Republicans who support the Recall Gray Davis effort contact him:

Sounds strikingly similar to Peter Arnett's, "the war plan has failed", doesn't it... and we all know what happened from there.

His comments don't imply the CRP is opposing the recall, or that Rob Stutzman is disparaging the recall effort, only that the grassroots effort thus far doesn't seem to be a roaring success. Can this be denied? I honestly don't know, one way or the other. Is it succeeding or not?

Ohhh - good point - I like that Arnett analogy! Funny thing is, today was the biggest day of receipt in signatures for the Recall Gray Davis Committe.

We will pass 100,000 signatures this week on the strength of the Internet alone. Total dollars raised between the Recall Gray Davis Committee and the People's Advocate group is $500,000 to date. Yet the newspapers report specifically OPPOSITE information.

To then have the CRP spokesman piss on us is unforgivable. He is not speaking for the party that voted overwhelmingly to back this recall - many of these people have volunteered and worked very hard in collecting these 100,000 signatures. We hope you all join this FReep! We will be asking our 70,000+ people on our mailing list to join this FReep as well!

Read the post I just made. He certainly did disparage it. How else would you describe "failing." Despite repeated successes by our effort - without one dime from the CRP despite the overwhelming vote of support from the delegates. Mr. Stutzman is either freelancing and needs to be spanked or else he is advancing someone's agenda (Parsky? Someone else?)

Didn't know we even had a Republican Party out here.

I ask again...Is it failing or not? What do you think? Will the recall succeed or not? I suppose the ultimate answer will come when the deadline arrives, and the recall either qualifies or doesn't. But I'd agree that as long as the CRP has maintained it's neutrality about the effort, Stutzman should probably keep his yap shut about it.

First - the recall is going extraordinarily well. But second point is that the CRP did not state it's neutrality. The delegates voted overwhelmingly IN SUPPORT! And this is what the spokesperson says about the effort that the Republican Party members (grass roots) support? This is how he is helping to advance the cause? Who needs Bob Mulholland and the Democrats when the CRP spokesperson does a Baghdad Bob routine on what is arguably an immense success already!

I see your point. If the party delegates voted to support it, the party needs to be supportive of the effort, and not feign neutrality.

I would ask whether the vote of the GOP delegates at the recent convention was binding on the Party. One certainly gets the sense that the professional Republians are trying to stay clear of the recall effort.

Yes, it is the official endorsemnent of the party of the recall effort.

To demonstrate the success of the recall effort, just look at the leading recall website. We've had so many downloads of petitions (well into the hundreds of thousands) that in just two months we have leaped to become one of the most popular California political websites (notwithstanding national interest sites based in California - perfect example, FreeRepublic.com which ranks very high.

74,154 – RecallGrayDavis.com [Recall Gray Davis Committee]

84,935 – Politics1.com [National Political Website]
119,495 – RTumble.com [Rough & Tumble Political News Website]
149,060 – CalNews.com [California News Page]
172,500 – SmartVoter.org [League of Women Voters Election Info Website]
252,852 – CalChamber.com [California Chamber of Commerce Website]
306,856 – DavisRecall.com [People’s Advocate Recall Site]
441,314 – CAGreens.org [California Green Party Official Site]
531,940 - DarrellIssa.com [Recall Gov. Candidate Darrell Issa Website]
675,398 - CAGop.org [Republican Party of California Website]
766,331 - CA-Dem.org [Democrat Party of California Website]
1,976,011 – Gray-Davis.com [Gray Davis Campaign Website]
No Ranking – DitchDavis.com [National Tax Limitation Committee Recall Site]

Rankings come from www.Alexa.com - partnership of Amazon and Google for Website Popularity Ranking

- Note the ranking is leaps and bounds above the very own CRP website (employer of Rob Stutzman who bad-mouthed us).

Need 897,158 - deadline is September 2nd. Deadline to qualify for a special election is sometime in July (there are multiple interpretations of the law right now).

The idea here is to collect first few hundred thousand signatures from the online initiative plus volunteers. Meanwhile fundraising would continue to get our $500,000 raised to $1 million or more.

We would then employ signature gatherers and direct mail of hundreds of thousands of petitions to get us the 1.2-1.3 million we want (to ensure enough of a cushion so that we can withstand disapproved petitions). We are ahead of our schedule with both signatures and money.

The reason we are seeing a continuing increase in signatures received is because our fundraising is exceeding expectations. Thus we have already mailed out tens of thousands of petitions, in addition to the 400,000 already downloaded and the 50,000 that have already been emailed. This is just from our committee alone.

As people turn in their petitions expect to see us go from 100,000 to 500,000 signatures in no time!

Yep - and it is sure going to be fun to bring "shock" and "awe" to all the politicos who keep saying this can't be done. If Issa starts gathering signatures too (which would be the 4th effort circulating Costa's petition) then look out goldmine!
