KIRKLAND, Wash. -- Trevin Dilfer, the 5-year-old son of Seattle Seahawks quarterback Trent Dilfer, died Sunday in California after a 40-day battle with heart disease.

The boy's parents and three sisters were at his bedside at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford University.

"Trevin was a very brave young boy and we are comforted in knowing that as a child of God he has returned to his maker,'' the family said in a statement. "We grieve, but not as those without hope.''

The Dilfers thanked supporters and hospital staff while requesting privacy, and a family spokesman said there would be no additional comment. Team president Bob Whitsitt said the organization was "deeply saddened'' by the news.

Services were pending.

Trent Dilfer played for the Baltimore Ravens when they won the 2000 Super Bowl, joining the Seahawks in August 2001. He missed the second half of last season with a torn Achilles' tendon.

I got a private email about this a week or two ago and then didn't hear anything else about it.
I'm sorry to hear that the Lord decided to take him home early. It wasn't the news that I wanted to hear.

There was another Fresno State quarterback (last name begins with a B?) whose young son had leukemia several years back. I can't remember the name.

"I've had to overcome many obstacles in my life to quarterback a Super Bowl championship team. And I've had to overcome many barriers to become a better husband and father. All Pro Dad gives men the tools to circumvent obstacles and become great dads." - Trent Dilfer, Quarterback,

Trent and Cassandra have two daughters and one son. "Madeleine, Victoria, and Trevin know how much they're loved and how much I desire to be a good father," Dilfer says. Trent credits Cassandra for helping him become a better dad.

"We grieve, but not as those without hope.''

1 Thessalonians 4;13-18  ¶But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep,
that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord
shall not prevent them which are asleep.  For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel,
and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

FAMILY: Wife, Cassandra; and four children -- Madeleine, 6; Trevin, 4; Victoria, 3; and Delaney, almost 1 month

Inside info

If I weren't a football player, I would be ... Probably a schoolteacher, I would think. A school teacher and a football coach."

The best day of my life was ... "There are five of them. The days my children were born and my wedding."

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Trent Dilfer won a Super Bowl ring in 2000 when he led the Baltimore Ravens to victory in Super Bowl XXXV. Yet Trent says, "People are often enamored with my Super Bowl ring. But it's my wedding ring that I'm most proud of. And having a good marriage takes even more work than winning a Super Bowl."

And just what more can anyone say? God blesses them. We're blessed to be witness to that!
