Lieberman: Race, Religion or Nationality should not be an issue in Presidential Election
C-SPAN | April 27, 2003 | nwrep

Posted on 04/27/2003 6:58:09 PM PDT by nwrep

Joe Lieberman was speaking to students in high school in Derry, NH. In response to a question from a student about his Jewish faith and whether it would play a part in his potential Presidential duties, he replied:

"I don't think people should judge a person on his race, religion or nationality when voting in a presidential election".

This genius should read the Constitution. It is why we don't have Arnold running for the White House. Ofcourse, he conveniently invoked the constitution earlier while defending his right to fillibuster a hispanic Judge, in response to an earlier question about why the rats call themselves the party of the minorities and then fillibuster them.

Makes you wonder just what nation Liberman is a citizen of, if he doesn't want nationality to matter.

It always will be.
My prediction is that we'll have a hispanic President before any female, black or jewish President.

George P. Bush?!?

But it's okay for judges to be filibustered accordingly.

Who CARES whether someone is White, Jewish, Black, Mexican, or whatever. Just send us someone who doesn't have 5 million dollar homes with tax shelters and then wants to raise taxes on those who work hard to supposedly help 'the people', or whines like Eeyore, and has won at least one round of 'speak and spell' and understands the issues! It's better than what's on the plate now for 2004!!

If his Jewishness means nothing; he should get no consideration from Jews. Of course should, should not be in the debate.

You got it. That's just one reason why everything for 2004 is in such disarray. By the time you figure out who stands for what, you just don't care. The Democrats are panicked, and they continue to be at cross-purposes with themselves - their only hope, and yes, they are mobilizing to do this, is to sway the Greens over to block the Pubs and go Dem.

This statement is troubling. Very troubling.

Have I told you how troubled I am by this statement yet?

But how did he feel about Ashcroft's religion during the confirmation hearing?

Did he think Ashcroft was unable to uphold the law of the land because it conflicted with his religious beliefs?

replace "nationality" with "national origin," and there's not much wrong with the statement.

Which do you think he really meant? Or maybe even said, given usual press accuracy? Or do you think it should matter if one's "origin" is French, or Irish, or whatever?

There's plenty wrong with Lieberman without getting into a snit about whether he really thinks you can run for president while being a Slovak "national" -- of course he doesn't

I don't know, BohDaThone. Sounds to me like he doesn't know the Constitution says you have to be born here.Nationality has everything to do with it. Ethnic origin in this context may not be the deciding point, but national origin definitely is.

My comment was a taske off to ole Joe's annoying habit of using the word "troubling", which is his code word for "I'm too chicken to do the right thing about something".
