Early teen love can be so intense and so real, that some kids can't handle it. Sounds like James was one of those kids. And if he had the beginning of schizophrenia, he would seem a bit odd but otherwise normal to everyone else.
But I wonder what kind of grudge this kid had against the principal? It would seem more logical for him to go after his former girlfriend and her new boyfriend.

I wonder why he killed the principal.
