"Evil Had Triumphed, Until...."

Posted by Mike Denunzio Thursday, April 24, 2003

Mike DeNunzio is the chairman of the San Francisco GOP.

Evil had triumphed: Mass murders with use of chemical weapons, prisons for children, torture chambers, and the worse is yet to come. A brutal dictator living in marbled palaces with gold fixtures dining on delicacies, deprived a terrorized nation of nutrition and health care. Despite these facts, good men and women, brilliant academics, informed diplomats, elected officials, celebrities, and respected religious leaders, protested and opposed military intervention.

This Holy Week offered a time to ponder why good people would ignore a timeless truth: Evil exists, and it will always triumph, until it is opposed by good. Passover recalls that God intervened to help the Israelites escape bondage in Egypt. Good Friday tells of a bystander, who intervened to help a beaten man bear a heavy cross.

Why did good people oppose confronting such abject evil? Surely it was not their concern for the financial interests of the French, Germans, and Russians. Nor was it because of the mindless rants of ''no blood for oil.'' It seems they opposed confronting evil because evil is not easy to condemn like globalization. To confront evil, a leader must first truly believe that it exists.

Thankfully, for the 25 million men, women, and children of Iraq, one man did believe that evil exists. He stood alone, suffered the criticisms, and confronted evil. Because of his courage Holy Week 2003 will note that evil was defeated. (again)

Good? Well that's debatable. I call them moral midgets.
