That's why I don't believe they ever voted for Bush in the first place, the great majority of 'em. Their attitude is far, far too "C3PO" (Conservative Third Party Oddball) for them to have voted for "the Shrub" in 2000, with the prevailing attitude they showed here in the run-up to election.

... they are not like that! NONE of them? Giuliani (with deference to his leadership after 9/11) wasn't like that? D'Amato wasn't like that? Jacob Javits wasn't like that?

I'm not "bashing" New York.
Are you really going to sit there and say that "New York Republican" doesn't have a specific cachet?

I'll bet you could come up with a few thousand that aren't.
And tens of thousands that are.
Or maybe they're in the minority, but able to get elected with Dem votes.
I just keep thinking about the Conservative party, etc., the third parties in NY state that seem to siphon off the right-wing voters.

The really interesting news in this poll is the Union Household numbers. Across the board, as I scanned it briefly, it seemed to mirror the average figures. This is in the face of the conventional wisdom about union votes tilting heavily to the democrats, no matter the candidate. What most people don't realize is that nowadays, union households are about 40% republican, if I remember right. (I call us closet republicans, we're working on our secret handshake) The general membership is getting pretty fed up with being beaten over the head constantly with "support the democrats" and are just tuning it out. This puts all the states with high union membership up for grabs, not a lock for the dems anymore.

I'm from NYC (now living in the suburbs) and I'm a Republican and have always voted Republican.
In fact, I can remember the day JFK won the Presidential election and my Irish Catholic mother cried her heart out in misery over it.
We've got an awful lot to do to woo people to the party here, but we've got to keep upbeat and optimistic.

Look for a landslide in 2004!That's the only way he'll carry NY.

Good for her! She despised the Kennedys. Unfortunately, it seems the older she gets the more liberal leaning she's becoming.

Who cares about Hillary. She is not running in '04. FOCUS ON SCHUMER!!! He MUST be defeated.
To: areafiftyone
If New York Sen. Hillary Clinton challenged President George W. Bush in 2004, the not-so-native daughter would be on the short side of a 47 -- 44 percent split among New York voters, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. This wouldn't exactly be a landslide for Dubya.
And where exactly are they polling these New Yawkahs?? Outside a meth clinic??

"Bush is too well liked -- regardless of the economy -- to have much of a chance of losing against these uninspiiring potential opponents the dems have put up."
Don't be too sure. The 2004 race is eons away, politically speaking, and the worst thing that the Bush camp could do is get complacent. If the economy doesn't turn around by next year the war may be a distant memory.
