Kelly E. Miller didn't waiver.

Despite the political implications, the Chesterfield County supervisor today called for a vote to name Iron Bridge Park after his friend and colleague, retired county Supervisor Harry G. Daniel.

It passed. The decision ended a two-day debate that had at least one board member privately pushing for a deferral.

Bob Olsen, a Chesterfield resident and longtime Daniel foe, suggested that the board instead name the park after fallen Marine Staff Sgt. Donald C. May Jr., a graduate of Meadowbrook High School, located in the Dale District.

I guess he wasn't an Indian.

man-my hometown has popped up twice on the board in just the last few days for crap such as this-glad I've left Chesterfield behind. It is indeed a dead end place where only the good old boy system continues to function. I could not fathom spending another day living back there. And not just because of the political atmosphere.

I think that when someone does all the work to get a park for the people, then to acknowledge it is the proper thing to do. It is still possible to name the baseball field after the Marine and accomplish what is necessary in order to create a memorial that kids can be proud of in their daily lives.

My parents still live there, and I plan to visit it this weekend. I know little of the local politics there, since I've been to pissed at Richmond politics to notice the Chesterfield issues.

Don't quit your day job. Should you find work as a headline writer you would last about one hour.

I forget whether you live in Chesterfield or elsewhere in the area. My son has a ballgame at this park on Saturday night.

But, with all due respect, I think you're falling prey to the emotion of the moment. I'm not saying that naming the park for May would've been a bad idea. And perhaps delaying the vote would have been prudent. Any observer of Chesterfield County government would know that, while they are for the most part conservative, they are not always wise in their decisions.

That said, it's really over the top to refer to Harry Daniel as a "Good 'ol Boy, Living Poltical Hack Buddy."

Harry Daniel has served the Dale District and Chesterfield County faithfully for years. He is a man of integrity and dedication.

My personal preference would be to not name anything for the living. That goes for parks, airports...anything. I also refuse (with rare exceptions) to read biographies of those still living, but that's just me. So I would not have chosen to vote for naming the park for Harry Daniel.

Still, he deserves more respect than given in your title.

Why would I do that? I make more money than the headline writers.

I worked real hard on writing that offensive title and I hated to throw it away. Harry Daniel gives the appearance of being somewhere on the hack level by not politely thanking and declining the offer, whether he's a hack or not. Unfortunatley for him, everyone will now think "hack" when they see his name on the sign.

Not hardly. Not everyone.

I won't.

It says the guy they named it after actually helped get the park in place. Sounds like he probably deserved the honor. I'm sure they can find another way to honor the fallen marine.

There is nothing they can do for Sgt. May and his family now that won't look like a cheap consolation prize therby reminding people how they originally snubbed him.

The only way to make the park any tackier now is to use painted white used tires from the county vehicles to plant flowers in.

Where are all the interest groups agitating on staff sgt May's behalf?

My husband didn’t have a group to advocate on his behalf. He does have a street somewhere there.

He’s a hero to me and my children.
