For those who don't know the details behind this story: Last year the Texas House was controlled by the 'rats while the Senate was Republican. As a result, the legislature could not agree upon congressional redistricting and a court imposed a map keeping existing lines intact. Those lines are heavily gerrymandered to the Democrat's favor and give them a 17 to 15 seat advantage.

Republicans won majorities in both the state House and Senate last November, so the Texas Legislature's redistricting committee is currently considering new Congressional district maps. If they pass they could give the GOP as many as 4-5 more seats in the U.S. Congress, and in doing so virtually solidify a Republican majority for the better part of a decade.

This has the Dems shaking, including Martin Frost, who is one of the 'rat congressmen who could get booted out once his gerrymandered district is dissassembled. So now they're apparently resorting to theft in order to impede redistricting

Two questions:

1. If they know who did it, why haven't arrests been made?

2. How is this any less of a crime than the Watergate break-ins?

You, I, and all other people who keep up with what is going on, know that this will come down to no charges being filed because of inability to prove motive. "It was an accident. I thought the folder was one of mine (or ours)." Then the media will pounce on the Republicans for trying to make a big deal of it. Yet, the Republicans in Texas government know what happened and will take appropriate action.

Martin Frost's district was gerrymandered first by Jim Wright and the Democrats who ruled Texas for years. (Like many other areas of the country, Texans were slow in giving up their allegiance to the Democrat Party.) It includes a rather geographically small area but encompasses all the union related industries in the middle of a conservative population. They include a General Motors assembly plant as well as many government defense contractors such as Bell Helicopter and a Lockheed (formally General Dynamics) aircraft plant, that have union labor included in the contracts. That concentration of unionism must be politically neutralized.

If the maps are public property, why could Frost NOT be allowed a copy of it?

Oh, I would love to see Frost booted out ... wonder if there is any chance we could get rid of Eddie Bernice, or at least move her out of my district.

“If Rep. Frost knew that he was in possession of stolen goods, he has violated Texans’ trust and his most sacred responsibilities as a public servant.”

Why is that no politician, whether Republican or Democrat, whether from Texas or Maine has the guts to say "If he did what the rest of us do, he should go to jail"?

Rep. Martin Frost's (D) aide identified in theft video from Texas redistricting hearing
Republican Party of Texas Press Release | 4/23

Posted on 04/23/2003 8:10 PM PDT by GOPcapitalist

AUSTIN – Susan Weddington, Republican Party of Texas Chairman, today called on Congressman Martin Frost, D-Arlington, to cooperate with the Department of Public Safety’s investigation into the theft of a state employee’s property.

On April 10, a folio containing congressional redistricting maps was stolen from a committee room in the state capitol. The folio and its contents belong to a GOP legislative aide. DPS has video footage of three men, including one identified as Frost senior aide Gerry Hebert, apparently leaving the committee room with the loot. Shortly after the theft, Rep. Frost produced one of the purloined maps to reporters in Washington, D.C.

“Martin Frost has an obligation to cooperate fully with the Department of Public Safety’s investigation and should immediately explain how he obtained this stolen map,” said Weddington. “If Rep. Frost knew that he was in possession of stolen goods, he has violated Texans’ trust and his most sacred responsibilities as a public servant.”

DPS is investigating the theft as a class B misdemeanor, punishable by up to a $2,000 fine and 180 days in jail. If the pilfered goods were transported from Texas to Washington, D.C., the crime may be a federal offense.

People in Dallas don't get that much frost during the winters, some years more than others. But they have their Martin Frost, always willing to offer them federal largesse at their own expense. People in Dallas will say "How high" when Martin Frost tells them to jump! Many honestly think Martin Frost is "up there" fighting for them! Forget the idea of Dallas conservatism. It is no more.

The GOP needs to remember the Rule of Law and deal with any thief by the law. No policital criminal should ever be allowed to serve in an elected positon again. The GOP is weak and is afraid to use the law. They just want to protect their elected positions. Remember Nixon? What happened to him? Just do what is right for the people and our society.
