[history]
A pair of peregrine falcons is tending four eggs in a perch on the 14th floor of 55 Water St. in downtown Manhattan, the city's Department of Environmental Conservation announced yesterday. Placed on the endangered species list in the '70s, 16 falcon couples now live in the city, the DEC said. Their return shows "environmental conditions are improving," said DEC Commissioner Christopher O. Ward.

tending four eggs in a perch on the 14th floor of 55 Water St. in downtown ManhattanThat might explain why they are on the endangered species list in the first place. Why is it that the same folks who eschew creationism and the Bible and preach the Big Bang and evolution have so much trouble with the idea that it is part of the natural order that some species thrive, while others are unable to adapt and end up on the extinct list? If they want to go "au natural" they ought to let nature prevail instead of trying to thwart it when it decides a certain species can't make it...

We obviously need to build more to help the falcons. The pigeons (and therefore the falcons) sure will love that giant jungle gym Mayor Bloomberg is building as a replacement for the Twin Towers.

About ten years ago I was living downtown and kept a bird feeder on my window near the fire escape. One morning I woke up and was surprised to find a falcon perched on the escape railing and making a meal of a wren.

I live in downtown Brooklyn and have seen both owls and hawks in my yard...they feed on the neighborhood mice in the backyards as they pass through.
