[history]
FOUR GIs arrested and charged with stealing nearly $1 million in cash from money found hidden in Baghdad had intended to filch another $12 million, The Post has learned.
Army investigators yesterday discovered three aluminum boxes - each holding $4 million in $100 bills - that they believe the sticky-fingered soldiers stashed away to be recovered by them at a later time when the coast was clear, sources said.

This is like that George Clooney movie of a few years ago,
Three Kings, which was based on the Gulf War.
These guys were really stupid trying to pull this off. You only get away with it in the movies.

Throw the books at the theives. They are blackening the name of the US armed forces. I believe as they are in an Arab land, they should face arab punishment....HANDS OFF!

This is a real blot on what has been an impressive performance by the military. That being said:
1. These are engineers. Shouldn't they be working on the power and electric grids?
2. Unless it's counterfit, shouldn't the money be used for salaries and rebuilding?

I have seen a lot of people screaming for these guys' blood who have: (1) Never faced death with only a lousy $200,000 insurance policy to secure your family's future; (2) Suddenly come out of a very chaotic situation then stumbled upon enough cash, apparently abandoned by the people whose ass you were sent to kick, to secure your family's future forever.
If I can kill a guy I ought to be able to take his canteen or something as a souvenir. Why not his cash cache?
In all seriousness they ought to be punished somehow but I'll be pissed if they do a day in jail. If it were the old Army days, I would just have a First Sergeant beat the crap out of them and forget it ever happened. These guys are not going to come home and act out Dead Presidents in their hometowns for God's sake.

You're talking about 4 guys here, not the entire army. I don't think the actions of 4 men should be seen as a blot against the hundreds of thousands of others who acted honorably.

It is a blot, though, and it does make the job ahead more difficult if there is any question at all about the honesty of our soldiers.

As far as your question about why aren't they working on the power grids if they're engineers. These 4 are most likely combat engineers. If you want obstacles built or breached, or if you want something generally blown to h#ll, give 'em a call. As far as electricity work or major construction? No.

Well, if guilty, I can. The lack of honesty and values belongs on the other side, not here.

I gotta agree that the temptation was pretty extreme. After all just exactly who were they stealing it from? And the answer isn't the Iraqi people.

Most GI's know that when the 1sgt comes looking for you, you are in big trouble.
These soldiers should be punished.

Oh, gee...because it wasn't his, either?
In all seriousness they ought to be punished somehow but I'll be pissed if they do a day in jail.
When you steal $12, it can usually be settled by getting the crap beaten out of you. When you steal $12,000,000, you kinda volunteered for slightly more serious consequences.
If it were the old Army days, I would just have a First Sergeant beat the crap out of them and forget it ever happened.

No, they've just demonstrated that they cannot be trusted with anything of value.
