I can remember driving across the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, which takes the I495/I95 Washington D.C. Beltway over the Potomac River, during the summer of 1975 and not being able to see the Washington Monument. Now, it can be easily seen on even the worst air pollution day. That's real progress.
I would like to see small catalytic converter/mufflers for gas powered yard machines. That would help too.
I won't give up my Bar-B-Q though!

The world is SO different, unimaginably better, today from the dystopic SF book "The Sheep Look Up" ca. 1970. but I guess you have to be old enough to remember the time, how we were on this terrible downward spiral...

This article is right on about the past and present. I didn't know that the future was quite as good as he says, but he's probably right. BTW, I live in Canada (have also lived in the USA) and the same improvements are visible here in spite of the fact that there is less environmental legislation and much less enforcement of what there is. The most notable improvement is around Montreal, which 30 years ago had brown and purple soggy skies and today is quite clear.
