Ten years in the penitentiary could be a death sentence for former Gov. Edwin Edwards.

That's why a committee of Louisiana residents is working to free Edwards before he finishes serving his time in prison.

Committee members, some from Cenla, said they plan to circulate a petition asking President George W. Bush to commute Edwards' 10-year gambling racketeering sentence.

1 million Louisianans do not believe the governor is guilty

Is that sufficient reason for a commutation on racketeering charges?

"..1 million Louisianans do not believe the governor is guilty."

The article does NOT say that. It "does" say the "committee" plans to TRY to collect 1,000,000 signatures on their petition. I suspect their chances of collecting even a tiny fraction of that number are those of the proverbial snowball in hell.

Anyone from Louisiana who isn't a crook himself KNOWS that Edwin is/was guilty of those crimes he was accused of, as well as multitudinous others for which he was too slick to get caught.

May Edwin croak of old age in prison!!

He believes the president is honest and fair and "when he sees that 1 million Louisianans do not believe the governor is guilty, I do not think he will want the governor to serve a 10-year sentence."

The 1 million number who think EWE is not guilty was taken from the foregoing quote by Shreveport businessman Ed Powell, a long-time EWE booster.

If Edwards had gone to prison when he had originally been sentenced instead of endlessly appealing his conviction, he'd probably be out by now.
