They've built a wildy successful entertainment business on the back of free-market America, and they have the clout to show appreciation without worry about an industry backlash - unlike their less-established heavy metal counterparts.
He calls himself a liberal, but I assume he's more social liberal than anything. I know I heard him talk about his love of America before 9/11. He said something like, "Has anyone ever gotten off a boat and kissed the ground and said, 'Thank God! I'm in France!' No. Never happened. But, it happens all the time in America." He also sounds pretty anti-communist, which is always a good thing. Still, I'm sure I'd find his social views pretty repellant.

Right. And, boiling it down, American government is not benevolent. It can't be: it's not wealthy (only the king or dictator or what-have-you would 'own' everything). Our government's not supposed to own anything.
So, in order for government to give anything to anyone, it must first take it from someone else. Which is why the ignorant social 'program' mentality is a house of cards.
So --- this guy gets some things; he doesn't get others.
