President Bush yesterday scaled back his proposed tax cut by nearly 25 percent in an effort to prod Congress into passing the measure in time to stimulate the economy before next year's election.

After insisting for months that he would not budge from his 10-year cut of $726 billion, Mr. Bush yesterday endorsed a $550 billion compromise that was passed by the House. The Senate is pushing for an even smaller cut of $350 billion.

Said to be most furious among Republicans is Vice President Dick Cheney, who appeared in the Senate on Friday expecting to cast a tie-breaking vote on a $350 billion tax cut that could be increased later in the year. Cheney was apparently broadsided with the news that Senate Republican leaders had cut a new deal making an increase all but impossible.

Uncle Bill. Uncle Bill. Uncle Bill. As my favorite president used to say, "There you go again." You're just a Bush-hater, glass is half empty kind of guy, aren't you?

If you do just a little searching above you'll realize, you're not going to get a tax cut.

No, Bill. What it says is that the RATs want to take away the tax cut that Bush gave us in 2001. This was Bush's tax cut all the way, and he got it passed in one of his first acts as president. Bush is obviously not going to get everything he asked for, thanks to the Senate, and he's got to get what he can get. If he succeeds, we will get 3/4 of the apple, rather than the no apple the RATs wanted.

Did you vote for President Bush in 2000?

Just curious...

I'm sorry, the addition of Cissy, Jody and Buffy on the scene doesn't explain why before their arrival, 50 something bachelor Uncle Bill Davis had a 50 something live in English manservant to manage his modest Manhattan high rise condo.

The Cissy 18 year old bombshell/adopted niece mojo is disturbing in a really alluring and arousing way.

It's so absurd.

We don't have a Theocracy where George Bush can pronounce edicts.

Bush presents initiatives and budget guidelines. He can only sign or veto any final tax bill that comes out of Congress. They craft legislation. Not Bush. Congress.

I don't know if people here are ignorant or working a scam. This forum deserves a more sincere and good faith approach than we're getting. Anyone who views 49 out of 51 GOP Senators voting for their interests, and 0 out of 49 Democrat members voting their interests, and blames the two GOP members is either a moron or a fraud.

It's the same script the same usual suspects followed in 1999. It's a lie.

You're making too much sense. Uncle Bill doesn't want you talking common sense. I agree with you. I'm beginning to think this is a con game by Uncle Bill and his cronies to divide the Republican party. I would not be surprised if he and/or some of the other pack of wolves are really in reality associated with the RATs.

Bush playing "what does this tax cut cost?" with moderate RINO's and Dems?

Republicans will never learn.

Hope you don't waste too many millions losing in 2004 Mr. President.

Even Stephen Moore is playing the "$350 or $550 billion" game and he's supposed to be a huge supply-sider.

It's no wonder we can't get basic common sense economic policies...even the best party, the GOP, doesn't have a clue.

As long as the language used is of the choosing of the Dems, they'll lose every time. Remember, these same morons said the capital gains tax rate reduction passed by the GOP Congress was going to "cost" the Treasury $60 billion in two years. Instead, they increase capital gains tax revenues by almost 3 times their predicted "loss".

But here's the White House and Congress trying to score changes in marginal rates, increases in "credits", etc. so statically it's ridiculous.

If some sales director tried this logic in their budget projections, I'd fire them. But then again, the Dems and a lot of economically challenged GOP members probably think if they doubled ALL income tax rates next year, they'd get double the revenue.

HA!

If you think the income tax code is a mess, you try and implement a national sales tax.

First, I suggest you get a copy of your state's sales tax code. You'll be reading for a decade.

Second, do you want Congress and every special interest group (worse than the income tax) lobbying for exemptions? Again, read your state code.

Feminist would demand an expemption for monthly hygiene products. Otherwise it's discrimating against them because it's not their fault men don't have a period.

You can already hear the cries to exempt "food" and "medicine".

You'll have every left wing and right wing interest group out there suing and demanding exemptions in the thousands. Every product sold or every service offered will be debated as to whether or not it should be taxed by every politician in the country.

Not to mention once the "progressives" jump in and demand different rates based on the product. A Mercedes will have higher sales tax rate than a Saturn, etc. You can't stop it.

As far as I'm concerned, we are much closer to getting a true flat income tax than thinking we'd ever get parity under a national sales tax.

When you post a news item, and then carpet bomb the landscape with totally unrelated and unsolicited links, you are just showing your contempt and disregard for others here. Nobody is going to slog through that swamp.

If you thought the item was compelling enough to post as a thread, you should have some comment or take on the issue. Why did you post it in the first place? To construct a springboard from which you can spam a maniacal anti-Bush agenda?

That's an affront to this place. I don't know if you are a selfish boor or incapable of discerning a measured and meaningful presentation. If you have an ideological agenda that does not leverage the major parties, your responsibility is crafting a better political approach. If you don't, you're just an asshole here to sabotauge, corrupt, scam and demoralize. That's unacceptable in a serious minded forum. What is your proposal to reclaim the $750 million tax cut?

It's an insult to the forum when anyone works a systematic program of sabotauge and destruction. Find something you support and work for. Be a proactive and influential force. You are against Bush? OK. What are you for, and how are you going to make that happen? If you just live to show how much you despise Bush, without pursuing an alternative political route, you are nothing but a cancer in our midst.

The $750 million plan can't pass through the Senate.

49 GOP Senators would vote aye for that number. Two GOP Senators vote nay. All 49 Democrat Senators vote nay.

It's the RINOs?

I'm past expecting some folks here to be serious and proactive in their pursuit of political gratification. FR could be a remarkable vehicle to strategize and organize a new, innovative and coordinated political plan. But, that requires an honest approach.

Being anti-GOP and anti-Democrat isn't enough. That's a fashion statement around here. It's empty pretense.
