[history]
"We ought to let the United Nations decide the future of Iraq. The [Iraq] war is a good thing if done right."
Unfortunately, the president who couldn't recall much during his impeachment depositions has also forgotten about the dramatic failure of the United Nations following his own military adventurism in Haiti. President Clinton sent troops into Haiti a decade ago in order to remove Raoul Cedras, the leader of a military coup, and restore power to Jean Bertrand Aristide, a leftist tyrant. Subsequently, Clinton called in the U.N. to take over with the peace keeping and the nation building.

I believe that during President Bush's second term he will be able to address the question of the UN. Up to this time we have been able to hold out a hope that it might be useful, but the failure of Iraq is the last straw necessary. It is going to take some time for the lesson to sink in, though, so the time is not yet ripe for the President to weigh in.
I've never been a big fan of the UN, but I can imagine that with MEANINGFUL reforms, it could be a good institution. I also believe that President Bush would not propose reforms that undercut the US sovreignty. Until, and unless, such reforms occur, I will be adding to a whole bunch of articles: KEYword -- UNIRRELEVANT --- when I run across articles demonstrating the failures of the UN, as has been the case for many articles the past several months.
