I hear you. But it was my father who always covered for my younger addict criminal brother. The guy is 30 now and useless. Dad isn't much better. We were not abused at all. That bugs me a lot. A few times in my life my husband asked me if I could defend my brother if he did some henious crime. I would never. I would also tell my story about my fathers covering.
I mean them both no ill will however the years regarding them made me cold. It gets better as I get older and raise my kids and love my husband. I will never cover up for my child.

It sucks, doesn't it? I agree with you on the "no ill will," but I have washed my hands of my mother & brother. It kills me, because I've lost all of my other siblings, the latest last year, but I just couldn't take the crap anymore.
