EU plans rapid air bridge for sick Iraqi kids

ATHENS, April 17 (AFP) - The European Commission said Thursday it had begun preparations to build an "air bridge" in collaboration with the Red Cross to fly wounded Iraqi children to hospitals in Europe as soon as possible.

Commission president Romano Prodi said European Union member states had agreed proposals by the EU's executive arm for an air bridge for the most seriously wounded.

"So with the Red Cross and other humanitarian organisations, we are preparing this air bridge so that we can act immediately and more intensively inside Iraq, and allow these seriously injured Iraqi children to be transported to hospitals in Europe or those closest to the region," he said.

Prodi was speaking at a news conference after two days of EU talks in Athens which committed the 15-nation bloc "to play a significant role in the political and economic reconstruction" of Iraq.

The airlift plan was announced on Wednesday evening by French President Jacques Chirac, who said the European Commission would arrange the airlift in cooperation with "the occupying powers" -- the United States and Britain.

Chirac said he had discussed the idea with British Prime Minister Tony Blair who was "favourable to this initiative".

Prodi, arguing "speed is indispensable", said the Commission had decided to act as Iraq's health system broke down in the days after the fall of Saddam Hussein.

He said it would be preferable to treat wounded children nearest their families in Iraq.

"But the news we have now ... is that there are cases in which this is impossible," he added.

The Commission, which oversees EU aid projects, has begun channelling 21 million euros (23 million dollars) into Iraq in partnership with the International Committee of the Red Cross, and is hoping to release another 79 million soon.

Why the most "seriously injured Iraqi children"? Why not the most seriously injured Iraqi's? That's the way triage works, unless all you are really trying to do with your "air bridge" is score political points.

For the children. For the puppies. For the antiquities. For the quagmire.

Why the most "seriously injured Iraqi children"?

Because small children can't read the words "Made in France" and "Made in Germany" which will be on the "other items" being shipped out of Iraq with them.

Well, any emergency medical practitioner will tell you that it is most important to reach such casualties within the first "golden hour" after the trauma. This might have been a very effective program had it been set up about a month ago. Too bad its proponents were too busy fiddling with papier mache puppets on the streets of Paris and Berlin at the time.

No Chirac did. But no doubt this airbridge isn't charity - money will probably be overpaid to France for this service out of UN held Iraqi money. Since the Red Cross is involved, I'm almost 100% sure this isn't a freebie.

WTH's with all the "wounded Iraqi children" all of a sudden? What, are there tens of thousands of them? Where are they? Who "wounded" them?

Sounds like another U.N./Lib PR ploy!

As well, as others have pointed out, why is the life of one "Iraqi child" worth more than that of one "Iraqi woman or man"?

Quagmire indeed! If it sounds like crap, smells like crap, and looks like crap, it's crap!
