"We need to reduce to a bare minimum fats, sugars, salt and caffein in our diets. We should live on complex carbs (like whole wheat pasta), low-glycemic index sugars (like apples), complementary amino acid protein (like brown rice and beans), veggies and a some salmon oil for Omega 3 and Omega 6 essential fatty acids. Replace salt with potassium. Use fake sugar if you most have olfactory sweetness. Get over craving the smooth feel of fats on our tongues: it's not worth the harm."

If you've got to eat like that, who wants to live??? Atkins works great and you can enjoy your life.

When I went for a checkup at the docs about a month ago my cholesterol test said I was at 120. The nurse told me that it is perfect. I was on the Atkins diet for about 6 months when they did the test.

Same happened to me. My doctor congratulated me on "finally taking his advice". When I told him that I completely s***-canned his advice and went 180 degrees the other way, he refused to believe it. I told him he was free to believe whatever he chose to believe, but I knew the truth.

Oatmeal sucks. Always did, always will.

You mean, low glycemic index fruits: lots of apples, bananas, light on the OJ and pineapple.

Actually, apples and bananas are not good low carb fruits. The best are berries (all kinds) and most melons (except watermelon).

I'm sorry, I tried it and without bread it was tough. Anything that takes away my pizza and beer is bad! A may stay alive longer, but I won't live!

My father said the same thing a couple of years ago! Well, at least about the bread - he's not a beer drinker. Last July, he went to the doctor and found out he weighed 333 pounds, and he said that, at that moment, he decided he could live without the bread. LOL!

Dad's lost almost 70 pounds since then, and he says it's the easiest thing he's ever done. He does allow himself a macadamia nut cookie from Starbucks once a week or so - but he's still losing steadily (like most men do - sigh).

My mother started low carbing two years after I did - and she's lost over 50 pounds so far.

Just FYI: Miller Lite has 3 carbs in 12 ounces, so it's okay for post-induction low carbers.

As for pizza, whenever I want some, there's something the low carbers at alt.support.diet.low-carb call a "meatza," which is a pizza with a ground beef or bulk sausage base. Some people make pizza using portabello mushrooms as a crust. Others take slices of pepperoni and put them on the bottom as the base. A few people just go ahead and order a pizza, but eat only the toppings.

Not eating meat and instead eating only a high carb diet is a recipe for nutricional disaster. Look at the societies in the World that eat what you advocate and see how productive they are (physical and mentally) verses those with a more balanced diet weighted towards meat.

That said, it is best to eat in moderation and avoid substancial quantities of obviously poor nutricional value foods, since not all of us are blessed with forgiving genes.

Alcohol in moderation?

I don't drink, so that's never been a problem for me. However, for low carbers who do, their alcohols of choice are:

1. Hard liquors of the non-sweet variety. (No carbs)

2. Dry wines. (About 1 carb per ounce)

3. Miller Lite beer (3 carbs per 12 ounces).

Note, however, that your body will burn alcohol calories (1 gram of alcohol is about 7 calories) ahead of ANY OTHER type (fat, protein, carb). So, if you're low carbing and stalled, look to see how many alcohol calories you're consuming.

I know a PhD'd animal nutritionist/scientist (specializes in fattening beef cattle), who every spring and fall goes on a 2 to 3 week "Atkins Induction", cleansing diet and stays away as much as possible from refined carbs the rest of the year (though I've seen him enjoy the more-than-occasional dessert or hot roll). Only, he's been doing it for 30 years or so--way longer than it's been called "Atkins Induction," but as long as he's been in the nutrition field. He says he uses the 2 to 3 week diet as a sort of a "reset button" for his liver and pancreas, so that when does eat the dessert or hot roll, it won't cause as much damage and weight gain as it would otherwise.

I don't even eat matzoh anymore, which makes it a bit difficult during our Passover seders, but I refrain on the grounds of Pekuah Nefesh.

BTW, each slice of matzoh is about 25 grams of carbs, with 1 gram of fiber, for a net carb count of 24....

I know all that.

I was referring to the FDA Pyramid that said "alcohol in moderation".

I was just cracking wise. I'm not an everyday imbiber anyhow, just a weekend social drinker.

I'm stuck driving most of the time, so I'm usually a one-drink-Charlie anyway. Early in the evening, so it's dissipated well before I get behind the wheel. If someone else is driving, that's a different story altogether.

I had my usual amount of "Stoli and clubs" while on Atkins, and it didn't seem to inhibit my weight loss any.
