DHAKA, Apr 17, 2003 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Bangladesh wants central role of the United Nations for an interim administration in Iraq for conducting election, reconstruction and medical assistance, Foreign Secretary Shamsher M. Chowdhury said here Thursday.

While briefing newsmen, he said Bangladesh is closely watching the outcome of the meeting of EU leaders in Athens.

Responding to a question about US threat on Syria, he said " Bangladesh cannot accept the concept of preemptive action any where."

snip!

Bangladesh's Finance Minister Saifur Rahman has warned that the country's economy will be hard hit by the slowdown in the US, one of its largest export markets.
The economic repercussions of the 11 September attacks in the US are likely to hit Bangladesh hard, he said.

World economists have already warned that poorer nations would be the ones who would suffer most from any resultant down-turn in the American economy.

snip!

If I were a Bangladeshi politician, I'd be darn sure I'd secured other export opportunities before running my cakehole. =)

Oh, sure. Without the support of that Bangladesh superpower it would have taken us an additional 5 minutes to defeat Iraq.

As funny as their expression of an opinion seems, it is consistant with the probable progression of UN action. Unfortunately, UN action matters due to the existing sanctions that the US doesn't want to brush aside setting a precedent they will regret later.

We are counting on getting the oil flowing again promptly to finace the new government so that we don't have to do so ourselves any more than we already are committed to do.

The existing sanctions prohibiting those oil sales will be used by Russia, France and Germany to leverage their positions on (1) debts owed them, (2) their role in approving new governments with UN stamp and involvement, and (3) a share of new contracts.

This is why the axis of weasels is so smug, they know that Blair's commitment to a British future with the EU won't let him back Bush completely as he has done til now and that the sanctions will be the sticky point in getting the money rolling to help Iraq.

Yesterday Bush called for a prompt removal of the sanctions in his speech in St. Louis and the media didn't touch the eventual issue because they know it is a problem facing him that they can balloon later.
