[history]
April 17, 2003 -- TWO weeks before the war to liberate Iraq began, Syria's President Bashar Assad made a visit to Tehran for 12 hours of "dense talks" with Iran's ruling mullahs.
The visit, Bashar's fifth in two years, underlined his growing dependence on Iran as a regional ally. (By comparison, Bashar's father, the late President Hafez Assad, visited Tehran just once in his 30-year rule, and then only for six hours.) At the visit's end, officials on both sides spoke of the "strategic partnership" between the Syrian Ba'athist regime and the Khomeinist ruling clique in Tehran.

I don't think they understand the power of the United States.

Yup. I'm with you.
We need to take them both down. It's gonna have to happen sooner or later. As Patton said, about the Soviet Union, "it might as well be while we have the army there to fight 'em with."
Syria first, militarily. Iran by cover operations, and military action if necessary. Before they get a nuclear reactor on-line.
Then we're free and clear to deal with that crazy little North Korean b@stard...

The timing for Syria is RIGHT NOW. Do it now.
Strike sudden, hard, fast, and the action is over by the time the news media wakes up.

"If we don't confront Syria and Iran on their own turf, this could become Vietnam all over again. Lets end this axis right now. Invasion of Syria if we keep finding syrian passports on these terrorists, and covert/political action in Iran should do the trick."
Something tells me we learned a whole lot, from Vietnam. And this isn't Vietnam.
In less than two years since 9/11/01, two terror regimes have been erased.
Geographically, Pakistan is now between Afghanistan and India. Iran is between Afghanistan and Iraq. Syria is between Iraq and Israel.
If regime change can be accomplished in Syria and Iran, by any means, it would be further evidence of the futility of opposing the "Coalition of the Willing."
Putting matters in historical time perspectives, rapid progress has been made, and our military presence in the region is now much greater.
Our weapons are awesome, and our strategy/tactics are proving to be unmatched in the world. Our covert and intelligence work looks pretty good, too.
We can inflict a kill ratio of unbelievable proportions, without nukes. Yet our restraint seems to bode well for changing "hearts and minds." (It works, either by fear, or by gratitude for being liberated).

"My implication is not that this is Vietnam, I think it came out wrong. I was just trying to express the point that if we don't invade Syria if they continue this, we are putting ourselves in a "hands tied behind our back" scenario, just like Vietnam."
Agreed. But I don't expect we're going to just sit on the present situation, and let it fester.
ANY regime that isn't cooperating is on the list. We have shown that French or UN approval won't stand in our way, as far as pre-emptive self-defense against worldwide muslim terrorism.
Syria could be "regime changed" by their own military. Iran could be similarly toppled, by fomenting internal revolt (and giving covert and overt support).
It will be revealed over time, which regimes fall into various categories. As strong as our capabilities are, it takes time.
Right now, mopping up Iraq, consolidating our position, resupply, rest, analysis of new intelligence, diplomacy, covert ops, will keep us busy.
And the time will be available for our enemies to VERY carefully decide what they choose to do. We will prevail.

The problem with Syria is unlike Iraq we don't have any legal justification to invade. Bush used the legal justfication to invade Iraq, but what would he use as legal justification to invade Syria?
I think he would like to clean up this mess but I doubt he will act without "legal justification."
Does anyone have any ideas what that might be?

You are on target.
It is obvious that the arm chair generals/admirals and the armchair Secretaries of State are starting the same old BS that they did about Iraq the year before we regime changed Iraq.
That BS is if we don't act right now re Syria/Iran that all will be lost. Most of them predicted the same BS that due to foot dragging, we would lose the war in Iraq. We would suffer 100 of thousands of casualties due to the cowardice of our president and the soft hearted Powell. As usual, that was BS versus the reality of what happened when we were ready.
I for one am willing to let our President, Rummy, Powell, our special ops and the CIA handle this. In the meantime the administration has started building the case against Syria. While this is going on the coming implosion is building up in Iran. Yo Kim Chi Head, the short Donged, is begging from his bunker to talk to us.
However, if Syria does something really stupid, we have a really huge aircraft carrier, the USS Iraq, next to Syria. Then we will have a lot troops and tanks ready for any stupid moves by Assad.

Time and again this Administration has shown its mastery of political/military execution. I have all the faith in the world that events occurring in both countries, aided and abetted by our unequaled special ops troops, are even now being steered in the direction of our choosing. Namely, regime change from within.
Think of it another way, the DU paranoia way, Carl Rove is directing these efforts to coincide with the 2004 elections to help bury the Franco/Germanic/Russian/UN loving RAT candidates. That thought has me rolling on the friggin' floor with belly laughs.
I thank God, we now have brilliant adults in charge of cleaning up the abysmal mess of foreign policy left in their laps by the Clowntoon team which resembled a fifth grade government class play acting at global policy.

The only way Iraq will become a quagmire like Vietnam is if we allow Syria or Iran to become a sanctuary like we did for North Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia while engaged in South Vietnam.
We need to carry the full fight to wherever it goes. Otherwise, we fight on the enemy's terms. The American People are not patient nor understanding of that sort of conflict. We will fail if we don't pursue this war to the heart of the enemy and defeat him completely.
The Democrats, just as in Vietnam, prefer the "sanctuary" approach, and endless talk to 'solve' the problem. That's a sure loser. But, be assured they will blame it on somebody else when it fails.

Today's LA Times has a big article on Hezbollah, most closely tied to Syria and Iran (and Lebanon).
I'm not an international lawyer, but I expect that since Syria sponsors and harbors Hezbollah, and that Hezbollah killed 300 American servicemen (Marines) in 1983, we can come up with a legal case, if we decide to pressure that country.
In time, pressure will build for change. The change doesn't always have to be immediate military attack.
Non-military pressure should work better, when the enemy can see what happened in Afghanistan and Iraq.
They can either work with Powell, or they can work with Rumsfeld.

The factions that want to turn Iraq into "a giant-size West Bank" for the U.S. with a campaign of terror might decide the issue -- and, for our sake, I hope sooner than later. A long campaign of attrition and subversion could put us back in the pre-9/11 days of delay and denial, considering how difficult it is to determine who's who in Iraq.
