You are right. I was guilty of assuming that history and linguistic logic applied to the current situation. Although a Brigadier General (1-star) is named that because that was historically the rank that commands a Brigade, nowadays it's more typically a full Colonel that commands a Brigade. A Brigadier General is usually a staff officer (no command), and a Major General (2-star) usually commands a Division.
All that said, that just makes my point -- i.e., what is a Colonel doing commanding only 150 men, what a screwed up army -- all the more true.
