UNITED NATIONS (AFP) Apr 16, 2003 Syria introduced a draft resolution in the UN Security Council Wednesday that would make the Middle East a zone free of weapons of mass destruction (WMD). "We believe such a draft resolution is a very important factor for the peace process and security in the Middle East," Mikahil Wehbe, Syrian ambassador to the United Nations, told reporters.
He said Israel was the only state in the region not to have signed the body of treaties and conventions covering WMDs in the Middle East.
The United States accused Syria late last week of carrying out WMD programs and of harboring terrorist groups and officials of the fallen regime in Iraq.
"We are concerned about Syria's own weapons of mass destruction," said US ambassador to the UN John Negroponte.
"I spent quite a lot of time this morning telling my colleagues of Syria's ongoing support for Hezbollah (Lebanon's anti-Israel Shiite movement) and that Syria harbors Palestinian groups who reject a peaceful solution," he said.
Syria's draft resolution, backed by most Arab countries and distributed to the press, is to be considered Thursday by experts of the member nations of the Security Council before being put to a vote.

Murderous bastards would love to leave tiny Israel unable to defend itself, wouldn't they?

My guess is the slime balls are hearing the rumble of tank treads. The pentagon is letting them know they are changing the name of Iraq to, Gateway to Syria.

That is precisely what motivates this vacuous action! The irrationality of the Arab viceral feelings toward Israel continues to blind them. Time for Syria to vacate Lebanon and asee what happens. Time for Iran to stop funding and arming terrorists in the Middle East and see how quickly the Hamas-Hezbollah bloodlust comes to a head. Syria is in the grips of a Ba'athist regime nearly as brutal as Saddam's version. WMD free zone? It would be suicide for Israel! And the lying regimes surrounding Israel know it.

Fine with me - first up to totally disarm - Syria. Unfortunately, these creeps will never disarm, so their statement is nothing but political posturing.

AAaaaaaah. I missed that anti-Joo angle. I was wondering why in the wide world would they want to potentially trap themselves.
I see Assad is still hoping to fulfill his father's long term goal of defeated Israel via chemical weapons after their total humilation in direct conflict.
Despicable.

Of course they want Israel to disarm. This would be suicide for Israel until such time as ALL Israels' enemies give it up.

Syria introduced a draft resolution in the UN Security Council Wednesday that would make the Middle East a zone free of weapons of mass destruction (WMD). I have a better idea for ensuring peace in the Middle East. How about making the Middle East a Baathist-free zone? Or better yet, how about making the Middle East a dictator-free zone?

Ah, yessss... just like the gun laws have kept AK47s out of the hands of murderous criminals.
To: Oldeconomybuyer
This is akin to Bill Clinton declaring Chappaqua to be a wanker free zone.

Probably useful at this point to remind all of us WHERE Israel got its nuclear armaments capability: our trusty old ally France:
http://www.fas.org/nuke/guide/israel/nuke/farr.htm http://nuketesting.enviroweb.org/hew/Israel/Isrhist.html I don't lose much sleep over Tel Aviv having several hundred nukes in their arsenal, but you can see why it might make their immediate neighbors a bit jumpy. Now if they would all just kiss and make up, as Afghanistan appears ready to do, we can rest easy.
Perhaps the recent dustup in Iraq will persuade the secular-leaning Muslims to rein in the Wahabists, and other menaces to civilization, and eventually relegate them to the same status as neo-Nazi cultists in the wilds of Idaho. One can always hope, anyway . . . while keeping one's powder dry, and fighting skills honed.

I think it is a very reasonable proposal as long as the inspection team is comprised of three divisions of
the U.S. Marines, complete with air support from the U. S. Air Force, Navy Seals, U.S. Rangers, and SeaBees for opening bunkers.
