SACRAMENTO -- Several environmental organizations have sued the U.S. Forest Service to halt logging until the agency completes court-ordered plans for maintaining fuel breaks on the Plumas, Lassen and Tahoe national forests.

Despite a June 2001 order by U.S. District Court Judge Lawrence Karlton, the agency has not completed an analysis of the effects of flammable grasses, shrubs and other undergrowth resulting from logging in strips across nearly one-fourth of the three national forests, said Patty Clary, executive director of Californians for Alternatives to Toxics (CATs).

Is a fire in a forest that has had fure suppression for forty years a NATURAL occurance or GOOD for the forest? Do you know that some species are habituated to frequent mosic burns while others commonly regenerate after stand-replacing fires? Such grossly oversimplified ideas common to popular opinon are precisely why politics has no place in a complex process like forest management.

Or some Clinton leftover in the bureaucracy who is withholding the money to do the work.

...And some species are obliterated by it, especially when the temperature of that natural occurrance equals the surface temperature of the sun.

VERY good possibility. Wish the Forestry Department - all departments, actually - would fire the Clintonista, red tape jockey bureaucrats. They're nothing but parasites.

Privatize. The government has no business claiming a virtual monopoly in forest management.
