It didn't have a legal right to exist.
The difference between the American Revolution and the Civil War is that one was a rebellion against EVIL, and the other a rebellion against GOOD.

By the rational that it wasn't. Nobody considered them independent except the southerners themselves. That is meaningless. You can call yourself independent, you can call your self the Pope for that matter. But until someone starts referring to you as 'Your Holiness' then you're just another nut.
