Education leaders: No tax cuts

By C.D. Kirkpatrick, The Herald-Sun April 15, 2003 8:15 pm

RALEIGH -- The state’s education leaders have asked the General Assembly and Gov. Mike Easley to rethink proposed education budget cuts, saying the systems cannot absorb them without damage to their ability to carry out their missions.

In a Monday letter, UNC system President Molly Broad, Department of Public Instruction Superintendent Mike Ward and Community College System President Martin Lancaster suggest lawmakers delay scheduled reductions in sales and income taxes.

The tax nazi's are at it again. The UNC system just raised tuition again last year and now they don't want to get rid of the "temporary tax" (Yeah, right couldn't see this coming).

My wife works at a charter school and my son goes there. The public schools get twice the money a charter school does. They get a sum for operational expenses and then a sum for salaries. The charter school only gets the operational sum. They get by and have the same costs as a public school. I just want to know where all that extra money goes the public school gets. Hmm........

NC ping!
Please FRmail me if you want to be added to or removed from this North Carolina ping list.

I am shocked... SHOCKED! that Ea$ley is thinking of cutting the education budget.
After all, in Ea$ley's impeccable grammar, "Four-year-olds don't have but one chance to be 4."

Missions???? I thot they were working for the taxpayers, trying to educate children.

On the local High School scene, twenty per cent of the seniors will not be graduating this year. There is a reason for this, students were kept in school and promoted, to fill the seats and keep the daily per head money coming in.

Of those graduating, many have only a rudimentary eighth grade education.

Maybe Mikey should consider cancelling the You're-A-Peon, trip by the Dept. of Commerce.

He could keep the $ "For The Children".

What happened with the proposal to build a hotel and golf course for NC State? If my memory serves me ( a stretch) it had a price tag of around $60m.

Under the circumstances, a rather silly way to spend OUR money.

"No Tax Cuts"????? Geez, this kind of BS really gets my blood boiling.

Memo to elected NC Republicans -- you'd better oppose any and all of these tax increases. If you're complicit in raising taxes, why would the public buy a message of "oh, we wouldn't raise taxes if we were in the majority"??? Stand your ground and make it clear that you want no piece of this charade.

I will have to check into that.

The last thing I recall is that the plans had either been killed or scaled back.
