I hate to rain on everyones' parade, but is it possible that some of these people were REAL criminals? You know, thieves, rapists, murderers, etc.

Unlikely. Sadaam recruited his real criminals into his Fedayeen units.

Your mean like Saddam, Uday, and Qusay? Do you think maybe that's where they're hanging out?

Sounds like punishment for political prisoners.

I beg to differ with you.... I didn't hear of Sadaam or any of his relatives walking UP out of the prison.

Unless the Iraqis made all their prisons deep underground like that, which is costly and therefore unlikely, I doubt they would have put them in this kind of facility.

No, Saddam let all the killers, rapists, and thieves out of prison and gave them weapons to fight the US prior to the war.

I'm sure these buried and hidden cells were for the political sort.

You know, thieves, rapists, murderers, etc. Highly doubtful. those 'children's prison' victims were family members of political prisoners. and if you just hear the earnest stories, they were given 5-10 years for the simple expression of distate for a tyrant.

Last October, Saddam freed 'all the prisoners' ie the real criminals. Now consider - what kind of people do you need to become violent guerilla fighters and 'fedayeen'? Just my speculation, but I think Saddam needed 'paid volunteers' for the violence of war, and who better than the criminal class for recruitment.
