'Bull Durham' event back on: Anti-war activists Robbins, Sarandon invited to re-create anniversary

The 15th anniversary celebration of the baseball flick "Bull Durham" appears to be warming up in the bullpen after all, despite its cancellation by the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Sportscaster Bob Costas says officials were wrong to nix the upcoming event in the wake of anti-war statements by Hollywood stars Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon, and he's looking to stage the event on his own cable TV program.

Costas says he's invited the stars of the film to appear on HBO's "On The Record" "not to talk about the controversy, but re-create what they would have done up in Cooperstown."

A national debate erupted last week when Dale Petroskey, president of the Hall of Fame, sent war opponent Robbins a letter canceling the festivities slated for later this month:

The President of the United States, as this nation's democratically elected leader, is constitutionally bound to make decisions he believes are in the best interests of the American people. After months of careful deliberations, President Bush made the decision that it is in our nation's best interests to end the brutal regime of Saddam Hussein, and to disarm Iraq of deadly weapons, which could be used against its enemies, including the United States.

In order to accomplish this, nearly 300,000 American military personnel are in harm's way at the moment. From the first day we opened our doors in 1939, The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum – and many players and executives in Baseball's family – has honored the United States and those who defend our freedoms.

In a free country such as ours, every American has the right to his or her own opinions, and to express them. Public figures, such as you, have platforms much larger than the average American's, which provides you an extraordinary opportunity to have your views heard – and an equally large obligation to act and speak responsibly. We believe your very public criticism of President Bush at this important – and sensitive – time in our nation's history helps undermine the U.S. position, which ultimately could put our troops in even more danger.

As an institution, we stand behind our President and our troops in this conflict.

As a result, we have decided to cancel the April 26-27 programs in Cooperstown commemorating the 15th anniversary of "Bull Durham."

Petroskey further explained his reasoning in a statement posted at the Hall's website:

"Given the track record of Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon, and the timing – with our troops committed in Iraq – a strong possibility existed that they could have used The Hall of Fame as a backdrop for their views."

Costas: Baseball wrong to cancel 'Bull Durham' event

"[Petroskey] might have been less afraid if it was someone who was politically inclined who was more in agreement with his own views," Costas said on NBC's Tonight Show with Jay Leno last night.

"If he was concerned, he could have written to them or called them and said 'Let's make sure this is just about baseball and just about "Bull Durham" and let's not have any controversy,' and I'm pretty sure they would have respected that, but he took the wrong tack."

After receiving some 5,000 calls on both sides of the issue, Petroskey says in hindsight, he would have handled the issue differently, likely phoning Robbins to discuss the matter before canceling the celebration.

Meanwhile, sportswriters across America are putting the uproar into extra innings with their color commentary.

"In the end, baseball looks doofish, which is nothing new for baseball," writes Sports Illustrated columnist John Donovan. "Contraction, labor strife, steroids, quarter-billion dollar contracts, the Yankees, $7 hot dogs, 22 'home' games for the Montreal Expos in Puerto Rico, U.S. Cellular Field, the All-Star Game tie, Barry Bonds' moodiness ...

"The league-pushed concept of competitive imbalance, expansion, relocation, taxpayer-funded stadiums, skinflint owners, possible collusion, the players' union, cheap home runs, too many strikeouts, the Rangers' pitching ... sometimes, you wonder if the folks in baseball can get anything right. Just one thing. Once."

Good for you. I am disgusted to hear that he is going to have them on. But anything for ratings. Now all will tune in to hear the crybaby Tim. I also thought it was a lousy movie BTW.

You'd have to say he was not only over his head, but also that the rug he had over his head was as thick as his lamebrained commentary.

My email to Bob Costas:

"Bob, while you're worried about memorializing Tim Robbins' forgettable portrayal of Nuke Laloosh, I'd prefer to concentrate my efforts on honoring the memories of Todd Robbins, Michael Lalush, and the rest of the brave American servicemen who sacrificed their lives in order to free Iraq and the rest of the World from the brutal influence of a ruthless dictator who tortured, threatened, and murdered millions of real people."

Please tell me what is so freaking important about this movie? Is it a biography of an actual ballplayer? This shows that this has been more about actors/actresses more than the great players that have made the game.

A bit much ado about nothing it appears.

"sportsboy" bob costas is such an annoying little stat obsessed dweeb it does not surprise me at all that he'd do something stupid like this. My eternal memory of Bob costas will always be him screaming in a locker room full of celebrating chicago bulls "where is michael Jordan where is michael Jordan" cause he could not see over the other basketball players. Truly a pathetic man.

"Bull Durham" was not a terrific movie. As I recall, Susan Sarandon uses sex to re-motivate a player that is acting all washed up. The main scene is when they do the nasty on the kitchen table. She was some kind of baseball groupie slut. Heck, the role didn't even require acting on her part.

Were they going to show that scene to the kiddies at Cooperstown?

The movie's name should have just been "Bull".

Never figured Costas for a supporter of the radical left.

Probably hanging out too much with Marv Albert .

Sarandan and Robbins should stop complaining because she doesn't seem to be having any problem getting jobs. For example:

Susan Sarandan in "Ice Bound" (2003) (TV)
A Woman's Survival At The South Pole
This project is categorized as being in production.

Susan Sarandan in "A Whale in Montana" (2004)
Status: Pre-production
Comments: Filming is scheduled to begin on May 19, 2003.
Status Updated: 7 March 2003

"The Prince and the Freshman" (2004)

Release Date: TBA 2004 (wide)

Distributor: Paramount Pictures

Production Company: Paramount Pictures, Lions Gate Films (coproducing with Paramount; they're handling foreign distribution), Sobini Films (Julia Pastrana)

Cast: Julia Stiles (Paige), "SUSAN SARANDAN"(in talks); other cast not announced yet.

Director: Martha Coolidge (Real Genius, Out to Sea, Rambling Rose, Lost in Yonkers, Valley Girl)

Screenwriter: Katherine Fugate (she made her debut with Carolina, which also stars J. Stiles); rewrites by Jack Amiel and Michael Begler (cowriters of Raising Helen)

Premise: Paige (Stiles), a free-spirited American college student (and motorcyling enthusiast) starting her education at an Indiana university, meets and falls in love with one of her classmates, but what she doesn't know is that he's actually a British prince, Frederick, spending his "gap year" (before having to perform his princely duties) by hiding in America disguised as a regular guy (Sarandon would play his mother).

Filming: Production is scheduled to start in July, 2003 (pushed back four months from the original target start in March) in Prague, the Czech Republic.

Genre: Comedy, Female, Romance, Teen

While I love "Field of Dreams" and feel it is a great baseball movie in spirit, it's unlikely that the Hall would choose to honor the film, since one of the core threads of the movie is the redemption of baseball players that were perceived as having dishonored the game and were otherwise been eliminated for Hall of Fame consideration.

The headline is inaccurate. The event isn't 'back on,' it's being 'replicated' in a different venue.

Yeah, she's reduced to playing the mother...but our side has cost her $60,000 so far. She's a rich Hollywanker, but only a fifth-string attraction these days. Even 60K makes a dif when you have the lifestyle to support.

The list just keeps growing and growing. There's a red under every bed.

She's getting older and has a lot of competition. She'll be lucky to get "The Prince and the Freshman" with all this negative publicity.

Meanwhile, sportswriters across America are putting the uproar into extra innings with their color commentary.

Very predictable. These are the same left wing political so called sportswriters who dog John Rocker every time he gets picked up by a team. The so called sportswriters contantly dredge up Rockers 10 year old truthful statements about who he encountered while riding the 7 train in New York city. The so called sportswriters, Bob Costas among them, to this day ridicule Rocker and hold him up as a person to be scorned. Costas considers Rocker the worst thing to ever happen to baseball. Costas considers somebody who speaks the truth which is contrary to left wing political correctness speech as a much worse thing then the hundreds of wife beaters, rapists, drug addicts, murderers and other vermin in sports.

Note...The left wing sports station ESPN also tried everything in their power to give oxygen to Martha Burke's unconstituional attempt to force the private Augusta Golf Club to offer memberships to people they choose not to.

ESPN has, predictably come to the aid of left wing loonies Sarandan and Robbins by throwing them soft ball (no pun intended) questions. I thought it was amusing when Reese DAvis (ESPN sports anchor) got upset with Beano Cook when Beano told him that he sided with the Hall of Fame (a private institution). Reese was stunned, then he yelled, Beano how can you say that! Cooke said, look i'm a democrat, but when our troops are engaged in combat then all bets are off. Robbins and Sarandan anti war views are very well known. Poor Reese Davis didn't know what to say..lol

"Wasn't "The Natural" more along the lines of what the Baseball HoF would want to honor? Or "Field of Dreams?"

There is no other baseball movie more deserving of Hall of Fame honors than "The Sandlot". Baseball lost their focus years ago.

This is where Costas is mistaken. The fact is, "Mr. & Mrs." Sarandon have a long history of not respecting the events to which they are invited. They often have used those events as a platform for their political views.

BTW, for the record: "Bull Durham" wasn't that good a movie. Regardless of Robbins'/Saradon's politics, the movie doesn't deserve to be honored.

I thought it stunk.
