Did Americal military prowess and hi-tech weaponry give America an easy victory over Saddam Hussein's army? "Nyet", says Russian ambassador to Iraq.
The Ambassador, Vladimir Titirenko, told Moscow's NTV, "I am confident that the Iraqi generals entered into secret deal with the Americans to refrain from resistance in exchange for sparing their lives."
Titorenko also told NTV that it was "most probable" that Saddam and his top aides were killed during America's aerial bombardment of his many bunkers.
Le Monde also reported that Maher Sufyan, Commander of the Republican Guard, reached an agreement with American forces in which he ordered his forces to surrender in exchange for his transfer via an American Apache helicopter to an undisclosed safe haven.
Quoting anonymous sources, Le Monde's correspondent in Baghdad said that Sufyan ordered all Republican Guard forces to lay down their arms and go home.
Shortly thereafter an Apache helicopter escorted Sufyan from the Al Rashid camp, east of Baghdad, to an unknown location.
Maher Sufyan is not included on the infamous "deck of cards" created by US defense officials to highlight the most wanted individuals from the Saddam Hussein government.
Iraq's popular Information Minister, Mohammed Saeed Al Sahaf, Naji Sabri, Iraq's Foreign Minister and Oumid Medhat Mubarak, the minister of health are also not included on the list.

" if Russian had any extra money to throw around, things might have turned out differently in Chechnya. "
I have a feeling that the Russian tendency to carpet bomb indiscriminately war a part of their problem. The russians would see a group of rebels in a village hiding and then proceed to level the entire village. This would turn the local populace against them.

Yes, the ubiquitous Col. Hunt said on it O'Reilly and I heard the same story a few hours later by John Loftus on Bachelor & Alexander's radio show in NY. That the original source is a Russian general was not noted by either. Don't know why either would promulgate this story if that was the only source. Still, if true, I don't like it, even if, very theoretically it might have "saved lives". If it is true, and we have to admit it, it's gonna provide a much-needed boost to the waning anti-war crowd.

....And this is supposed to be a bad thing? Yeah I guess the Russian way is to slug it out with maximum infantry casualties. If this is true think of how many young American men are going home to their families who would otherwise not. Brilliant (if true, and I doubt it...more likely the Generals surrendered when they soiled all their "Depends" from U.S. bombs and ran out of them)
To: Nachum
No it isn't a bad idea. This article wants to minimize Americas war making machine (SHOCK & AWE)

So we bribed them to give up. So what? Does this mean we would have lost had they chosen to fight? No, it means many more of them would have died. That's why they chose the money, because it was better than dying.

I thought we were bogged in a guagmire... I keep waiting for this operational pause to be over. It was supposed to be 45 days, so I guess we've still got a month to go.

How dare us corrupt those incorruptable bloodthirsty killers.... why who has heard of such a thing in the middle east.... what will this do to the ..."Community"?
To: Nachum
Since the Iraqi army was a clone of the Russina (soviet) era military and equipted with similar weapons, this seems more like damage control. If you are any nation in the world whose weapons do you want to buy in order to defend youself? Obviously, the russian products and tactics have not proven themselves on the battlefield.
