Iraq contender scorns UN (. . . Iraqi people view the UN as allies of Saddam).

One contender to be leader of a post-Saddam Iraq has said the UN has a limited role in the future of Iraq.

Ahmed Chalabi, the Head of Iraqi National Congress, said the Iraqi people view the UN as allies of Saddam.

He was interviewed by Jonathan Dimbleby:
Jonathan Dimbleby: "You say that the United Nations should be kept out of this… but that suggests that you think that Britain and America are wrong to say that the UN should have a vital role in this process?"

Ahmed Chalabi: "I that the UN has a limited role in Iraq. They have messed up their previous enterprises in Iraq and the Iraqi people view them as if they are the defacto allies of Saddam, that is the view that is expressed here".

Jonathan Dimbleby: "But if the UN is kept on the sidelines there will be no legitimacy to whatever authority emerges because it requires the UN and the Security Council to authorise whatever emerges from the democratic process in which you are engaged?"

Ahmed Chalabi: "That is false. There is no requirement for the UN to sanction anything. The Iraqi people will decide…. And then the UN will accept whoever is representing the Iraqi people".

Jonathan Dimbleby: "If you are right that leaves the US effectively in the position of deciding whether or not the group that the Iraqi's put together will be recognised?"

Ahmed Chalabi: "No, the US will play a role in that, but other countries also have to make their own decisions".

I consider the U.N. to be allied with Saddam too....and too many like him.....

We need the Iraqi people to stand up and shout this to the world. The world needs to know how people who are oppressed view the UN and their appeasing ways. Of course they view the UN as dupes of Saddam, they have watched as the UN brought food into the country and allowed Saddam and his thugs take it all for themselves. The know that the UN witnessed many of the atrocities that happened to the people and did nothing about it.

Something has been weighing on my mind about Chalabi...

He is an Iraqi exile, not one to be accepted with open arms after being away from the homeland for a lot of years.

He has the ear of President Bush.

He is a secularist, and a proponent of democracy.

He is backed by the "Washington DC Hawks."

In other words, he's exactly the kind of guy we'd want leading the country when this is all over - And precisely who the Iraqis would not elect if he toed the Bush party line. If we install him, he's a "puppet."

What to do, what to do...

Suddenly, Chalabi starts attacking the U.S. for not getting services and aid restored quickly enough. He goes on the offensive versus the U.N.

This makes me suspicious. It seems to me he is speaking out a lot for a guy who was so committed to playing ball with the U.S.

Could it be that he's saying these things at the CIA's instruction to boost his popularity with the citizens, who will elect him for his tough stance against all non-Iraqi interference?

Coup de etat.

I will be watching this with great interest...

No, it's the other countries that will decide, obviously.

France won't recognize anyone, or will delay, in order to keep control on Iraqi oil through the UN Food for Oil program.

BTW, I'm shocked how the media totally fails to ask Iraqis what they think about the French, Germans, Russians and the "world." Also about the UN. And what did they think about the manoeuvres in the UN for the past year? Why is no one asking them?

At least somebody has it right! The UN has no power or authority except that which we cede to them. And that should be zero. Telling the Iraqis that they need UN approval to be legitimate is like telling a Christian that they need papal authority to be legitimate.
