A wildfire in Cochise County that started near the U.S.-Mexican border Sunday spread to about 1,000 acres south of Sierra Vista, officials said. The fire is the first sizable wildfire this year in Southern Arizona.
The fire is in an area about 20 miles southeast of Sierra Vista near Palominas on Bureau of Land Management land. David Peters, a BLM spokesman, said the fire was believed to have been started by an illegal entrant.
A Border Patrol agent saw a man believed to be an illegal entrant in some tall grass at about 10 a.m. As the agent chased the man, the agent noticed a fire in the same area where the man had been, Peters said.
Firefighters from Palominas, the BLM and U.S. Forest Service were working to try to contain the fire, said Carol Capas, a Cochise County sheriff's spokeswoman. Winds moved the fire north toward Sierra Vista, Capas said.
There were about 11 engines with about 65 firefighters on the ground, Peters said. No air tankers were being used.
Peters said winds were about 10 mph and gusts about 20 mph. Firefighters also conducted a burnout east of the San Pedro River to contain the fire and protect houses, Peters said. The fire was contained, but not under control, Sunday night, Peters said.

I almost threw a bottle at the TV the other night. Rummy was on TV telling people how important it will be to protect Iraqi borders.
What about our borders ya big dummy?

We are talking the trash fire from hell. Thank God the smoke covered the other smells. I went out yesterday to look at it -- about 2.3 square miles of ash and charcoal.
If the goofball who started the fire made it back into Mexico, the coyotes are probably kicking his ass -- if they didn't kill him. All the natural cover and concealment in that area is gone and they're gonna have to shift their clientele to new locations.
All of the underbrush is gone along with most of the oaks and walnuts. Just about all of the cottonwoods survived, but those damn things would live through a meteor impact.

the fire was believed to have been started by an illegal entrant. When those recent forest fires were started by Americans, they were arrested ---I guess starting fires is only a crime if a citizen does it ---just like felony document theft, fine if a Mexican comes and presents false identification but a felony if an American would do the same.
