It's official. The Galveston County Young Republicans (GCYR) chapter's "Shock and Awe" chili is registered to compete in the NASA JSC chili cookoff on May 3rd. Let's roll!
We'll send out details later, but we need folks to think about what they can donate to make this a great publicity event for our chapter, while being a lot of fun. We're going to need everyone to come out to help or just support us by coming out to enjoy the fun. If you have never attended the JSC cookoff, it's a blast. The general public can attend, since the NASA Gilruth Rec Center is open off of Space Center Blvd. to public access.
We intend to use this event to honor our troops defending our liberty over in Iraq. We'll have fliers with info. on how to contact the organizations assisting the troops and their families.
Ticket Information
All team members will be required to purchase a ticket for $4.00 (FReepmail me about purchasing a cheap ticket)
Tickets will also be available the day of the cookoff for $10.00 (changed from $6 orginally stated)
Team tickets will be sold by team captains starting April 7th. Team captains should check out the number of tickets they would like to sell to their team members at team captains' meeting.
Children 3 and under are free
Ticket entitles the purchaser to:
- Beverages
- People's Choice Voting Token
- Tasting Kit
We could use donations to cover the cost of the chili ingredients and incidental supplies, if you are so inclined. Your donation doesn't have to be much, but it will help avoid digging into the limited GCYR treasury funds.
I came up with a list of items that I think we will or might need for the cookoff booth:
x- Chili recipe (prize winning recipe to be donated)
x- Chili cook (a FReeper professional chef may assist us if his schedule permits, back up cooks identified)
x- 5 gallon chili pot (donor identified)
x- Stove (donor identified)
x- Propane bottle (donor identified)
x- Flags (donor identified will bring military service flags)
x- VP press briefing skit (donor identified)
- Podium ?
- Fatigues (donor identified, still need more)
- Half shelter/lean-to (donor identified)
- Flag poles ?
- Stakes for teathering flag poles ?
- Nylon cords/ropes ?
- Card tables (1-donor identified, more needed)
- Folding chairs (6-donor identified)
- Banner sign ?
- other ideas ?
TOPICS: Announcements; Foreign Affairs; Government; US: Texas; War on Terror
KEYWORDS: america; april19rallies; freep; galveston; houston; iraq; military; rally; supportourtroops; texas; troops; veterans
Whereas this is primarily a
Galveston County Young Republicans effort, I also want to use it to promote and recruit for Free Republic as well.
The Houston Area Texans (HAT) FReepers are welcome to come on down and take part in the festivities. The big HAT "we support the troops" banner would be a good addition to our booth, and a great way to promote FR and the HAT chapter.
We have a "ringer" chili recipe donated by one of our GCYR members that has won other chili cookoffs. Other FReeper support and/or just showing up to have fun is welcome.
$4 tickets for the chili cook off are now available from me. FReepmail me if you are interested. (They are $10 at the gate, if you don't buy them from me before April 28th.) The ticket entitles you to taste all (about 30+ teams) chili in the competition and drink included beer and/or soft drinks.
I will bring tickets to the Saturday, April 19th rally for the troops in Dickinson.
Come out and support the troops, while eating great chili and drinking cold beer. Can't get more American than that. :)

Deep in the Heartburn of Texas Chili"" This is 6 real man's alarm chili !! ""
- 3 pounds lean beef, Round, Chuck, or Sirloin, cubed or coarsely ground
- 1/4 cup salad oil
- 1 medium to large yellow onion, diced
- 1 large green bell pepper, diced
- 3 medium to large jalapeño peppers, diced, (or 1 medium Habañeros pepper)
- 6 cups water
- 2 bay leaves
- 6 tablespoons chili powder... Yehaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 10 cloves garlic, minced. Yo!
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon oregano leaves, crushed
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 3 tablespoons sweet Hungarian paprika
- 1 tablespoon dried onion flakes
- 3 tablespoons flour
- 6 tablespoons cornmeal
1) In a large saucepan, sear beef (cubed or coarsely ground), onion, bell pepper, and hot peppers, in salad oil until beef color is gray, and the vegetables are soft.
2) Add water, bay leaves, chili powder, salt, garlic, cumin seeds, oregano, red pepper, pepper, sugar, paprika and onion flakes. Simmer, covered, 2 hours.
Cool. Refrigerate overnight so flavors will mellow. Remove top layer of solidified fat. Reheat.
3) With a little cold water make a paste of flour and cornmeal. Add paste to chili. To obtain a smooth texture, cook and stir 5-7 minutes after thickening has been added.
Remove bay leaves before serving.
Serve with shredded cheddar cheese, more diced onion, and crumbled corn chips!
Serves 6.

So are you going to be available to lead this motley crew in cooking this awesome chili?
If so the process will have to be modified, since it has to be cooked starting in the morning and ready by noon (no overnight settling allowed) and we have to use at least 4 lbs of meat. Other than that, this could be our back up recipe, if our principle recipe donor wimps out on us.
Of course if you can make it, it's your call (within the rules of course.) I hope you can, we could use the help.

Apparently this year's cookoff will be getting a little more attention than in past years, so it is important to put on a good show for the cameras folks.
from an e-mail from the organizing committee:
There will be a feature article in the Space News Roundup (NASA JSC Newspaper available on-line to the World) after the chili cookoff and since this is the 25th Annual, we are looking for pictures all the way back to 1979.
We might even ensure that any good publicity we get for our support for the troops gets even wider distribution than usual. :)

Sorry...he is unable to attend due to prior commitments.
Good luck! I would attend, but I am in Indiana, which is a tad far to drive.

'Bob J' though you might want to put my chili propaganda signs up on your poster sight. These links will expire in a few weeks, so you might want to download them soon. Thanks.

I'm sorry to inform FReeperdom that the GCYR's 'Shock and Awe' Chili team has decided to drop out of the cookoff next weekend. We were all looking forward to this, but due to circumstances beyond our control we have to call this effort off.
You are all still invited to attend the event, but it won't be the same without 'Shock and Awe' Chili. :(
