Comon'...with some of the carrier battle groups coming home, I don't think Syria was serious war consideration anyway. Maybe the Syrians don't know that, but it doesn't hurt to keep 'em guessing.

Release of this was hardly accidental. The phrase "preliminary planning" is likely to cause some inadvertent evacuation in Damascus, and some sighs of relief in London. What Paris thinks about it I just don't give a rodent's rump.
I do think the "good cop, bad cop" routine is precisely the game here. What you have to remember is that it's the bad cop with whom you're left alone in the room.

I think we want to keep them guessing. We can roll up a division to the Syrian border to send a message without having to invade.

Our resolve is unweavering on our mission, we are serious about rooting out terrorism therefore we must elimate the sources of funding, training, recruiting, and safehavens!
For anyone to bow out now (war support) is like pulling the magic carpet from under our troops feet.
We must stand firm!

One thing's for sure, Assad might want to keep a spare pair of drawers handy, because if Syria has an a$$kicking coming, Dubyah won't just launch a couple missiles in the desert and hit a couple of camels in the butt.

I was thinking that this was a deliberate message from the Bush Administration until I read that the entire article is based on an unnamed "intelligence source in Washington."
If Bush wanted to send a message via "the good cop, bad cop" routine, he'd provide a better source than that. He'd tell Wolfowitz to talk some trash
Really weak journalism, at the very least. More likely pure fiction.

what is needed now are a few well placed drone attacks against targets in Syria, like maybe the swimming pool around that hotel on the coast in Latakia where our friends are staying, or any of the facilities where we think the WMD have been taken to. Some small hits, with 100% deniability back towards us.

I think a dozen Bradely's from the 4th ID should do the trick.

The Kitty Hawk will be returning to Japan so it will still be withing striking range of both Korea and Syria within a short time frame.

I think most of Hussein's group is at room temperature right now, and our President probably knows that. I think we are avoiding a full scale conflict there because our special forces can take out the rest of Saddam's regime.
On the other hand it could give us the element of suprise.
To: HAL9000
Unless someone shoots at us...we are done shooting for a while. tHis went well, so lets move on.
Setting up a functional Iraq will go further than attacking Syria.
We know we can kick ass anytime...lets show what we can do for those people like we did after World war II in Europe.

Nice...
"It is important Syria does not harbour people from Saddam's regime or allow any transfer of material from Iraq to Syria. I have spoken to President Assad and he has assured me that is not happening and I have said it is important that assurance is valid," Mr Blair told MPs.
and scary...bald faced arab lying trash -
The Syrian ambassador to London angrily rejected suggestions that Damascus had any weapons of mass destruction or was harbouring members of Saddam's regime. Mouafak Nassar told Radio 4's The World at One: "I will say I am wondering why they are targeting one Arab country after the other. They are ignoring totally the country that has mass destruction weapons - Israel."
Their lies will be exposed in due course. Oh, yeah - I really liked this one...
Mr Rumsfeld repeated accusations yesterday that Syria had tested chemical weapons in the last 12 to 15 months. However, Syria is not a signatory to the chemical weapons convention and would not be breaking international law if it did possess, nor is it suspected of selling chemical weapons to others.
As if we are tackling responsible nations that want to build a better world. Screw the islamocommunist international government bologna.
