Jean Chretien's Liberals are back in charge of Quebec. I guess that America-bashing helped defeat the separatists.

This is terrible news. The Qebecois have found a common Canadian nationalism... in joining the English Canadians in opposition to the US. It would be better if they just seceeded.

Interesting.

The liberal perty in Quebec is a "nationalist party". But this election had very little to do with separation and more to do with economics. The separation issue was settled a while ago and no one is really talking about it now.

The liberal party of Quebec is a combination of centre leaning liberals and conservatives such as Jean Charest.

Jean Charest campaigned on tax cuts and a conservative theme.

Hope CBC's prediction pans out. hawk

Not really; the Quebec Liberal Party enjoys only loose ties to the federal Liberal Party. Iraq and America-bashing weren't real issues in this election, but separation, the economy, and forced mergers of municipalities.

For the Liberals Quebec matters cause even if they lose Ontario in the federal election, they'll still remain in power if they keep Quebec. The next Prime Minister apparent, Paul Martin, like the outgoing Chretien, is from Quebec.

Too bad. Separation might have saved western Canada. Now the whole country needs to be punished. Don't mess with the USA!

Yeah, I forgot about that forced municipality merger issue. That really ticked off a lot of people.

I'm sure it wasn't directly but you know how the francophones are; what's wrong with tweaking America's nose. The Cretin still paid a high price to oust the separatists from control of Canada's second largest province and siding against America from political calculation must have been worth today's news.

The PQ wasn't serious about holding a third secession referendum any time soon.

They lost because they'd been in power for nine years and people wanted a change.

Many in Quebec and Canada were just tired of their nagging and wanted them to shut up and go away also.

Charest is a conservative and I do not see this as a vote of confidence for Chretien. If anything this is a dramatic shift to the right and an indication that Canadians want change. The polls did not reflect this landslide.

Jean Charest is trailing the PQ candidate in his Sherbrooke riding so far, but even if he loses, one of the Liberal MNA's with a safe seat will quit so he can win a by-election.

Quite the contrary, this is a rejection of left wing politics and bodes well for the Canadian conservative movement. Things are going in the RIGHT direction. The socialists in Quebec have been routed.Provincial politics and Canadian national politics are different. In British Columbia, the liberals are also the right wing party.
