Jean Chretien's Liberals are back in charge of Quebec. I guess that America-bashing helped defeat the separatists.

Not really; the Quebec Liberal Party enjoys only loose ties to the federal Liberal Party. Iraq and America-bashing weren't real issues in this election, but separation, the economy, and forced mergers of municipalities.

Charest is a conservative and I do not see this as a vote of confidence for Chretien. If anything this is a dramatic shift to the right and an indication that Canadians want change. The polls did not reflect this landslide.

The Liberal party in Quebec are "Liberal" in name only. As someone else mentioned they are the "federalist" party and are looked upon as such. Jean Charest is a conservative and he was the leader of the federal Conservatives before jumping to Quebec provincial politics to the federalist party which just happens to be the Liberal party. Someone else summed it up well in a post.
