Grijalva's challenges Bush to fairness quest: For every $1 you put in Iraq, put $1 in the U.S.

If it's good enough for Iraq, it's good enough for the United States.

That's the logic Rep. Raúl Grijalva and other Democratic lawmakers are applying to the Bush administration's plans to rebuild Iraq.

The former Pima County supervisor is signing on to the American Parity Act, a bill to require the administration to spend as much on building schools and hospitals in the U.S. as it plans to spend on building schools and hospitals in Iraq.

The bill has little likelihood of passage, but Grijalva said it sends a message about taking care of the country's social needs. "There's a great deal of symbolism involved in this," Grijalva said. "We're trying to make a point."

Other sponsors include Rep. Rahm Emanuel of Chicago, a former adviser to President Clinton.

Oyama to be honored

Grijalva today pays tribute a man he worked with while serving on the Tucson Unified School District governing board: bilingual educator Henry "Hank" Oyama.

Oyama taught at Safford Middle School and Pueblo High School before he developed the bilingual program at Pima Community College. A new TUSD elementary school was named after Oyama last year.

At 2:30 p.m., Oyama will receive from Grijalva an American flag flown over the U.S. Capitol. The event is at Grijalva's district office, 810 E. 22nd St.

Well, we all know the "motives" for the Dimwits pushing something like this (to cause as much trouble for Bush as humanly possible), and I don't think it is feasible, but I know a lot of schools and roads within twenty miles from where I live in the United States that could sure use some rebuilding.
