April 14, 2003 -- IT was to be an op-ed in 900 words for a Western newspaper, speaking of the gratitude Iraqi Shiites feel toward the United States and its allies for having enabled them to regain control of their shrines in southern Mesopotamia for the first time in more than 40 years.

If the Iranians had a hand in having him murdered, it will backfire on them big time.

Doesn't sound like it happened that way. It was a mob out of control after a cleric they believed was supported by Saddam. Khoei tried to protect him.
I keep wondering what kind of security is planned.

The incidents of physical violence have been amazingly sparse considering the lawlessness and widespread looting that gripped Iraq after the downfall of the dictatorship. Let's hope moderate voice establish and make themselves heard in the country's future affairs.

Thanks for the excellent article, hotpotato. If the Shiite leadership in Iraq turns out to be responsible and a force for positive change in that country, it may bode well for the future of Iran as well.

Another excellent article (among many) by the inestimable Mr. Taheri. He also wrote that editorial about the peace thugs at the big rally in London refusing to let Iraqi's speak, and confiscating their anti-Saddam signs.

This was a good man, it's such a shame that his life was taken before he could completely fulfill his dream.
As to Sistani, I think I read somewhere that they are trying to run him out. Looks like the Mullah who lived in Iran is trying to take over the south. I hope that doesn't succeed.

Jesse Jackson did the same thing in New york.
I think Taheri was just on John Gibbs but didn't catch the name clearly and it did not appear in text. Was an elderly gentleman discussing this same subject.
Thanks for the link to the other article.

I saw a message in the scroll bar at the bottom of MSNBC that stated the siege was over but no details and I haven't been able to find any more news about it. Haven't looked in a few hours though so I'll try again.
