'Avoid wearing of uniform' general warns local soldiers
San Antonio Express-News ^ | 13 April 2003 | Roddy Stinson

Posted on 04/13/2003 5:48:19 PM PDT by Lacey

"If possible, avoid wearing of the uniform when dining in public places." — From a "Protective Measures Awareness" notice sent to San Antonio's U.S. Army personnel by Maj. Gen. Darrel R. Porr on Friday

April 11, 2003, will be remembered as one of the saddest dates in Alamo City history.

Because of recent instances of harassment of uniformed personnel, Porr, the commanding general at Fort Sam Houston, felt compelled to warn the men and women who serve under him to use caution when traveling, shopping and dining in San Antonio.

"Two separate incidents against military personnel have occurred," Porr reported. "In the first incident, two males on the city's Northeast Side made threatening gestures and pounded on the car window of a drill sergeant and his spouse while they were on their way home.

"The second incident involved two sailors, in uniform, who were accosted by several males who said, 'You'd better not go to war,' as they departed a River Walk restaurant."

Porr provided this possible explanation for the hostile actions:

"There has been a significant increase of demonstrations throughout the United States in opposition to the ongoing U.S.-led military operations in Iraq.

"As individuals voice their opinions against military operations, they tend to direct their frustrations toward governmental and military symbols."

On receiving a copy of the notice from an anonymous e-mailer, I called Fort Sam to ask for more details about the incidents, in general, and the harassers, in particular.

A post spokesman indicated that more information was available, but declined "to go there."

He then made a point of emphasizing:

"Soldiers here in San Antonio have always proudly worn their uniform because of the support for the military.

"Previously, there has never been any perceived threat. This is quite unusual.

"Even during Vietnam, San Antonio was one community that supported the military forces.

"That's one reason the general put that notice out ... because (such harassment) is so unusual in this community."

The notice included cautions other than the warning not to wear uniforms when dining in San Antonio restaurants.

Porr also recommended:

"Be cognizant of people who gather and voice their sentiments against the military efforts in Iraq. Do not get involved."

"When in public facilities, soldiers should avoid conversations related to work or military operations in general."

"Always practice the 'Buddy System' when traveling."

"When in uniform, minimize the number of stops when traveling from home to work or vice versa. Wear civilian clothing when possible."

There you have it: San Antonio, Texas, anno Domini 2003, in all its un-glory.

What's worse ...

Community leaders continue to show pitifully little support for U.S. soldiers.

Example in point:

City officials have been mute as mice since troops entered Iraq. (The San Antonio City Council, which regularly passes resolutions honoring everything from the Dallas Cowboys to Hike and Bike Week, has deigned only to observe "a moment of silence" for the troops and their families.)

Add to that palpable hush the rants of the town's Saddam Hussein apologists, and "Military City USA" can easily degenerate into a South Texas backwater, where men and women in uniform can't safely wear their uniforms in public.

"Sad" hardly describes such a miserable state of affairs.

Fortunately, all of the news surrounding the recent threats isn't dreary.

One unofficial source I talked to said he had seen the police report of the incident on the River Walk, and he provided this description of the confrontation:

"Some Marines who were nearby saw what was happening and went to the sailors' aid.

"The matter was then taken care of by combined military action."

Now this makes me ANGRY! Our troops should be able to wear their uniforms with LOTS of pride. When I see military personnel in uniform, it makes ME proud. When we were in San Antonio a couple of years ago on the River Walk, I saw so many of them down there from Lackland and it just made me swell with pride!

That general needs to be sacked! Don't give me any of that whinny 'feel-my'pain' cry-baby, but they might get harrased crap ... Tell the soldiers if they are harrased turn around and kick the liviving SH*T out of those leftist pieces of merde!

Ah, but sadly, there are two problems with this. 1st, someone that wants to pick on service personnel won't pick on the specials forces types - they will go after the techs who are not trained in hand to hand. And 2ndly, if by some chance the service personnel DO beat the crap out of the civies - why then it is lawsuit time and the service guys will get busted in rank and fined (UCMJ). Believe me, I have seen it.

Too bad. As I have said before, we really should bring back dueling and legalize it. True, there would be some problems with professional duelists -- but those could be managed. And it would definitely bring back civility.

There are three of us. It's a good start. I give my word to the two of you and any others out there that I will not stand idly by and allow any military in uniform to be accosted or harrassed.

Liberals are often the most hateful and spiteful people you will ever meet.

I recently heard a story about a lady who was in the National Guard, went to the store in her uniform and had some people shout "baby killer!" at her.

These are probably the same hypocrites who support abortion.

Call me crazy, but I doubt that those harassing the troops are the types who go out and barfight every weekend. More likely they go to wine bars and watch Michael Moore videos afterwards.

This isn't simple "war protesting". This is criminal, threatened and/or attempted assault. These left-wingers are more than anit-war protestors they are anarchists, communists, and anti-Americans. These are the "torch SUV" eco-terrorists, or the stop ships from shipping supplies to troops crowd. I'll bet that if put under interogation these would be found out as probably being funded by North Korea or something.

Nobody that was anti-war and has seen on TV the joy of liberation that we have given an oppressed and abused people...that have seen the torture chambers and such and how our troops have handled themselves all through this, can NOW be this anti-American and militant. There was no baby-killing, women-raping, civilian abusing like other countries have done here. Therefore, there can be only one reason that those persons are acting like this: they're either paid, brainwashed or criminals. Take your pick, but this is not "freedom of speech or expression". In any case this shhould not be tolerated in any way. Can you say Guantanamo Bay Cuba anyone? Now there's the place for these types. They don't belong in the United States.

Hahaaaaa... I was waitin' for that part...

That is deplorable, that our military personnel get harrassed by low-lifes and the brass has to send out a cautionary directive... Jesus.

Anyone who harasses our soldiers is stupid. A current military individual is far better trained in the fighting arts than 90% of the harassers. Aside from being everything that one would think of, these "protestors" need, perhaps, to experience the wrath that they so wantonly desire.

I live in a part of Massachusetts where is has always been common to see reservists in uniform in shops and restaurants. I don't recall there ever being a problem. Of all places, you might expect some commie jackass in Massachusetts to be rude to servicemen. I'm shocked it would happen in Texas.

I'm also a little concerned that one incident is setting off alarms when it shouldn't. I hope the people at the base are not getting hypersensitive.

I wondered if the base authorities were over-reacting myself. I certainly haven't seen anything like this in my frequent travels.

Even if they were (overeacting, unfounded, etc.), my statement is one of general principle.

This kind of thing sounds like "hate speech" and should be added to every hate speech statute that the liberals push through. Fight fire with fire.

It also sounds like harassment to me. If someone is harassed for choosing a career in the military they deserve a big cash award in a civil suit. Again, give these liberals a taste of their own medicine
