In this piece I wrote a couple of days ago I talk about my own experiences with President Bush and his leadership style:

Steyn is right, of course.

First time I've ever disagreed with Steyn. I think we'll end up having to invade. They are, after all, Baathist. They have the HQ of all the major terrorist organizations there, and they are not going to kick them out or turn them into relief groups.

I was watching FOXNews last night and just howled when Col David Hunt was talking about all the surrounding countries watching what the Coalition was doing in Iraq. He described the reactions of the Syrian, Jordanian, and Iranian leaders as "toilets flushing all over the Middle East" as these people were considering what could happen to THEIR countires if the US turned it's eye toward them

a Bush aide stepped into the Oval Office to warn him that "the unpredictable Defence Secretary" had just threatened Syria

I have 50 bucks that says that's a complete fabrication on the part of the paper.  Who talks like that?

I don't think we will. I think the ruler of Syria is smarter than Saddam.

And ... don't forget - when Bush says he will do - he does! That being the case, Syria has a model in front of them of what will happen - they will be history. They will either cough up the Saddamites, or we'll take out the whole place - they get to choose - just what would YOU choose ...??

And further ... look at the size of Syria - a good spit and you're in another country. Two weeks to take Iraq - 1 day for Syria. They better not mess with Texas!

Thanks, Ivan! Steyn has understood more about President Bush than most writers, and explained it with great humor. This was a pleasure to read.

You post so many good articles that I don't often get to reply to all of them, although I read most. Thank you for doing such good work.

By contrast, it wasn't always apparent that his predecessor had objectives: what exactly was the desired end when Mr Clinton bombed that aspirin factory in the Sudan? In foreign policy, Clinton had tactics, not strategy: his inability to reach what the special prosecutor Ken Starr called "completion" extended far beyond Monica's gullet. On his tax cuts, on missile defence, on Saddam, Bush is completion-focused.

BRAVO......I love it when Steyn uses a sexual metaphor to describe clinton's presidental impotence!

I think the ruler of Syria is smarter than Saddam.

I thought so too, until I heard that they were sending weapons to Iraq, and hiding WMDs and scientists in Syria. Maybe they just feel their fate is tied to Saddam's, and would rather go down fighting than reform.

"toilets flushing all over the Middle East"

The lucky ones were near a toilet.

Most of the objections to him seem to be aesthetic - he's too hokey and Texan

These same people embraced a buffoon from Arkansas with a trail of murders
behind him like a gaggle of old shoes strung to a 'just married' jalopy.

I cracked up when he said that.

Colonel Hunt is my favorite miltary commentator and he's been correct on just about everything he predicted.

In addition, the man is an absolute riot.

Plus, what Bush aide says "defence"? When a real American says "defense", it's spelled that way!
