WASHINGTON, April 12 (UPI) -- A poll by Newsweek magazine finds that President George W. Bush's overall approval rating has risen to 71 percent from 53 percent a month ago, just before the war began.
The poll, conducted from April 10-11 and posted Saturday on the publication's Web site, also found that 93 percent had an overall positive view of the progress of the military operations in Iraq so far. The war had gone "very well" according to 73 percent of the respondents and "somewhat well" according to 20 percent.
The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
In other war-related findings:
-- Military successes in Iraq don't mean the United States should use force similarly in the future, 60 percent said; but 28 percent supported such actions. But when it comes to the other members of the so-called "Axis of Evil," support for military action goes up. Some 53 percent approved the use of military force against North Korea (35 percent didn't) and 45 percent said it was acceptable in the case of Iran (41 percent said it wasn't).
-- Support for the post-war effort appeared high, with about nine out of 10 respondents saying they'd support keeping U.S. troops in Iraq for periods ranging from several months to several years to maintain order and help establish a new government.
-- A total of 88 percent say it's very (67 percent) or somewhat (21 percent) important that the United States find "convincing evidence" of the banned chemical or biological weapons that the Bush administration said the Iraqis were hiding from U.N. inspectors.
-- About 87 percent of those polled think that it is very (67 percent) or somewhat (20 percent) important that the United States capture or kill Saddam Hussein, removing any doubts that he remains at large. But only 20 percent said they thought he actually was dead.
The respondents were about evenly split on Bush's handling of the economy, with 47 percent saying they didn't approve of his economic performance and 44 percent saying they did. Another 10 percent were unsure.
On healthcare, only 40 percent approve of Bush's work so far, with 45 percent saying they disapprove.
And would voters re-elect him? About half (51 percent) said they'd like to see Bush get a second term, while 38 percent said no and 11 percent were unsure. In early November, about the time when mid-term elections were held, 49 percent said yes, 42 percent no, and 9 percent didn't know.
HEHE... please ... if you get some good inside advice from those squirrels, don't hestitate to post it.
I think you are right about the Post/Newsweek.
It's a picture, a liber one at that. But at least it's good to know what those "squirells" are rattlin' 'round in their little pea-brained heads - no?
