Saddam Hussein used Viagra to pep up his sex life and enjoyed watching his enemies being tortured, according to his long-time mistress.

The Iraqi dictator was a "tender" lover who showered her with gifts and affection.

But as he got older he turned to the wonder love drug.

He also used a face-pack to look younger and spent nights watching videos of his enemies being battered and beaten, according to America's ABC News.

"Saddam, he don't need to force anybody. You are afraid. You are afraid to say no. I was with him because I was afraid of him," said ex-lover Parisoula Lampsos.

Ms Lampsos, 54, says she was Saddam's mistress for 30 years. She left Iraq a year ago and is living in hiding in Lebanon where she spoke to the American broadcaster.

She paints a picture of a dictator becoming more and more paranoid and twisted by power.

But it was not always like that. He was once a warm and generous person, Ms Lampsos said.

"He was tender, he was warm, he was nice, he was another person," she said.

But as the years began to take their toll, he began dying his hair, using a face pack to hide the wrinkles, and even resorted to Viagra to keep up his sex drive.

"He believe only for Saddam. He look at the mirror, 'I am Saddam.' He went like that. He looks. 'I am Saddam. Heil Hitler!'"

The president enjoyed quiet nights in. But rather than putting his feet up and watching a film, he would don a cowboy hat, puff on a cigar and watch a snuff video of his enemies being killed.

"He was happy, happy, happy," Ms Lampsos said.

Saddam 'watches torture videos and dances to Sinatra'

A woman claiming to be a former lover of Saddam Hussein says he enjoys watching videos of his enemies being tortured and dancing to Frank Sinatra.

She also says he dyes his hair, drinks whisky, has taken Viagra and danced to Sinatra's "Strangers in the Night".

Parisoula Lampsos is believed to have been his mistress for 30 years.

His favourite movie is The Godfather and uses herbal medicine to hide his wrinkles says the 54-year-old in interview with US network ABC.

According to excerpts released on Monday, she claims the dictator's eldest son Odai told her the Iraqi leader met Osama bin Laden in the mid-1990s and gave money to him. She personally saw bin Laden in one of the country's palaces in the late 1980s, according to the excerpts.

Ms Lampsos claims he enjoyed watching videos of his foes being tortured, sometimes wearing a cowboy hat for the occasion.

She also says Saddam once told her he ordered his son to be executed because he feared the son wanted to oust him. "I will kill him someday. Really, I mean I will kill him,'" she quoted him as saying.

Odai was seriously wounded in an assassination attempt in December 1996.

Friends and family feared him

A former mistress told ABC that Hussein placed his own son in the cross hairs of his wrath. Parisoula Lampsos said he tried to have his son Udai Hussein assassinated when he feared he might remove him from power.

Udai, who is the oldest of Hussein 's five children, survived the 1996 attempt on his life but sustained serious injuries. Like his father he is known for his brutality.

Udai first made headlines when he beat one of Hussein's aides to death at a party being held in honor of Suzanne Mubarak, the wife of the Egyptian president. At the time, Hussein pressed murder charges against his 24-year-old son but later dismissed the death as accidental.

The narcissistic borders of Hussein's world are legendary. A 600-page hand-lettered copy of the Koran on display in a Baghdad museum was written with Hussein's blood, which was donated a pint at a time. He plastered the streets with massive portraits of himself when he ousted Bakr.

The six-week Gulf War left his country in ruins. Sewage systems and telephone lines were out, electrical grids were down, and Hussein found himself in an underground bunker. He emerged from the ruins convince he had won the war.

When his old foe, the senior George Bush, lost the 1992 presidential election, Hussein stood on the palace balcony and fired his gun in celebration.

Lampsos told ABC that Hussein liked to smoke Cuban cigars and watch tapes of his enemies being tortured, sometimes wearing a cowboy hat to the viewings. She said it was his "happiest" time.

Hussein usually begins his days by swimming laps. At six foot two, he remains an imposing figure although he now walks with a limp. Dye keeps his hair jet black and his former lover says he enhanced their sexual encounters with Viagra. In recent years, he has replaced his military uniforms with well-cut suits.

Like Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, he has spent most of his political life sleeping in a different location each night. He drinks warm milk with honey, eats plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, and prefers fish to meat. But details of his living habits have failed to crack the code that dictates his thought process.
