Those funny Bushes....What is it about them only wanting to be one term wonders.

The biggest mistake the Gutless Republicans could make would be to pass an extension.

And he would be refusing to prosecute any violations of those laws

Yeah, if he was a facist without regard for the Constitution and the rule of law.

First of all, the "assault weapons ban" doesn't actually DO anything. It was a cosmetics bill that has already been sidestepped by all gun manufacturers.

Bravo Sierra.

Put a flash suppressor on your AR15 and you will sentenced as harshly as any rapist or murderer.

"Open your eyes. There has been more movement on abortion in the last two years than there has in the past 30 years and it is in the right direction."

Abortion is still legal in all 50 states,
and the rate is going up, not down.
Who's eyes are closed??

Apparently yours are, the abortion rate is going down and the younger generations are more pro life than their parents ever were.

You can have problems with Bush on CFR and the assault weapon ban but he is the most pro life President America has seen since the Roe v Wade and Bolton v Doe atrocious decisions.

The abortion issue is one where the moderates need to get militant. The extremes have dominated the debate, and the positions of all too many politicians. The result is stasis. It is time to try to break the logjam, and lance the boil of this issue, which in so many ways poisons the dialogue in the public square, and fashions hard political lines, which tend to spill over in a negative way into other issues. JMO, and I know the moderate opinion on abortion has relatively few supporters on FR. But it is my opinion.

The abortion issue may be an analogy to discuss Bush's performance on the firearms rights topic at hand, but it is at risk of getting off topic.

I guess I will be a Polyanna here, and yes, I am a Bushbot.

I will wait a bit, and see what the story unfolds.

People have been underestimating Bush forever.

I'll wait for confirmation from another source. I simply can't believe this.

"First, that was our plan with CFR, and we failed."

Bush signed CFR, and it did two things.

First, it made McCain irrelevent, as he shortly thereafter ranted against his own bill.

Second, the SCOTUS will eventually put an end to this "hush Rush" bill. And then the anti-free speech dems will have to shut up.

IMHO.

Bush needs more pressure to pick Constitutional Judges. We need to tell him to put heat on the Dems for Estrada. And Freepers who are complaining about the ban better write the Congressman and Senators!

I just emailed Bush a link to this thread and told him to watch his base (politely). I urge others to do the same:

vicepresident@whitehouse.gov

When the GOP is in office, they go back to sleep, and we get huge budget increases, important legislative initiatives defeated, and half of the GOP celebrating it.

You're right and its frustrating. Certain unprincipled lackeys will never stop making excuses for their man. Others may complain about it now, but next year they'll be marching in lockstep too.

One correction, at least: Perot didn't ball it up for the "right". Perot balled it up for Bush I and Dole (to an extent). Only wild-eyed pubbies could call either of those mushies members of the "right".

You've made a great defense, but you didn't address the nose-face analogy enough (you must have had plenty of other points to counter!). Cutting off the nose isn't being done to spite the face--it's being done to remove the cancer that the nose has become. It isn't pretty in the short run, but it's the only path to long-term survival.

I'm not a liberal, but $1 profit from actions taken by a public official is obscene.

The ban effected prices. There is a limited supply of both rifles and magazines. This has caused a huge increase in the price. Before the ban, an AR15 with a bayonet lug, flash suppressor, and all the other evil features could be had for $400 or less. Now you can't touch one for under $1200 in that same configuration.

The price on magazines is worse. Before the ban, a 32 round UZI magazine could be had for $5. Now the price for that same magazine is $25-$40. An HK-94 magazine was $25 before the ban, now it is $100+.

Besides the prices, the ban has also put gun owners in an unnecessary jeapordy. Unless you are very familiar with the law and know the serial number range of a particular manufacturer for preban and post ban guns, you can't be sure that the preban gun you bought after the ban is legit or not.

Is this the kind of law that should be supported? Nope. If Bush signs the renewal into law, I will not support him and I sure as hell won't vote for him.

His father lost his re-election bid because of the authorization he gave the ATF to reinterpret the 1968 sporting purpose clause. (it was not an EO as many believe). I hope GW learned from his father's mistake.

"There's a difference between being anti-gun and not wanting people to be toting around machineguns, assault riffles, and other such guns."

Typical anti-gunner talk and language. As a legal owner of machine guns, I 1. do not "tote" them around as you state and 2. I am offended by your remark.

"Bush cannot afford to Pi$$ off 5 million voting NRA members.
He is either with US or against US, he can't be both."

Absolutely correct. And if you add the 5 million NRA members to the 30 million Christians who won't vote for him if he allows the Israeli road map plan to continue; he could be in real trouble despite his successful and courageous victory in the Iraq war.
I truly hope he considers and does the right thing instead of the politically correct thing.35 million votes could hurt him badly.
