Bush Backs Renewing Assault Weapons Ban
Washington Post ^ | April 12, 2003 | Unknown

The Bush administration is bucking the National Rifle Association and supporting a renewal of the assault weapons ban, set to expire just before the presidential election. "The president supports the current law, and he supports reauthorization of the current law," White House spokesman Scott McClellan told Knight Ridder.

Tossing out the ban on semiautomatic weapons is a top priority of the NRA. Bush said during his presidential campaign that he supported the ban, but it was less clear whether he would support an extension.

Golly, they both sure look SCARY--just like those guns in the MOVIES! I don't think ANYONE needs a gun like THAT.

The lefties I know think *all* guns are 'assault weapons'. (And they plan to keep writing legislation toward that end goal...trust me) You wouldn't own one unless you planned to 'assault' someone would you? right? Buehler? (PS, they also think very large knives should be considered 'assault weapons' too...knife control has a nice ring to it don't you think?)

Thanks for the iggies. I was attracted to the CETME because of the price, which, as an expectant father (3 months to go, now!) appeals not only to me but to my REAL CinC, Mrs. Cut.

"Unfortunately, since the manufacture of such magazines for civilians is banned, no jobs are gained."

I was taking the statements to mean that, while no importation would be allowed, a sunsetr of the AW ban would allow for domestic production. I could be wrong, of course, but wouldn't THAT be a great two-fer?

We get good, U.S.-made weapons, Americans get new jobs, and all we lose is the cheap crappy imports. Don't get me wrong, the Second still applies, but it says nothing about imported guns.

Besides, very shortly all the "banned" imports would be manufactured domestically as well, as a great number were before the ban anyway.

Do you have a line in the sand? A place where politicans dare not tread? IF you don't, I think you need to seriously reassess you postions, and be sure to ask for a window seat on the train to the camps.

Well, if I did, it wouldn't be over 10-round magazine clips that are widely available anyway. One thing you purists must learn to understand (this for the sensible ones, not the name callers who are obviously just too smart for me). None of us will ever get to be the dictator of the U.S. We can't have it all just our way. Social Security is here to stay. Get used to it. Abortion will always be legal somewhere (New York, Massachusetts, and California will NOT ban it if Roe v. Wade is overturned). And there will always be a limit to the second amendment (you will never regain the right to own a machine gun).

That's life. And you know what? Even with all that, this is a GREAT country. You must fight for what you believe in, but don't go into hysterics when you don't get everything you want. And, for some of you, debate with dignity, and don't fall into the arrogant name-calling and condescension that we despise from the left.

As for the train ride to the camps, well, I don't think the assault weapons ban (which has been law for almost ten years, during which time right-to-carry has expanded to nearly every state) renewal is the slippery slope that is going to get us there. Bush is smart not to fight it. It's simply not worth the political capital.

Because the 20 year old soldiers who can carry a fully automatic Assault Weapon are not honored, respected or treasured by the same people who would ban the same guns in this country.

Uh, Timmy--we never LOST the right to own a machine gun. Check your facts.

"It's simply not worth the political capital."

Leaving aside the namecalling and deadcatting, and even the insurmountable Second Amendment problem for the minute, this STILL may not be true.

There is ample evidence that, had Bush pere not stabbed gunowners in the back in '91 or thereabouts, he'd have gained about 4-5 million votes, thus making his reelection that much easier just on progun votes alone. Those conservatives who questioned his "purity", and voted for Perot instead (?) might also have supported him.

Think of the results.

Those who have said here that the President wins NO Leftist votes for supporting a ban, but loses MANY conservative votes, are far from wrong. These are votes worth considering given the near-even split of the past election.

"To put Bush in his place you'll vote for a party that opposed the War in Afghanistan, oppsed the War in Iraq and wants open borders? Could you explain that logic to me?"

Easy. This issue is paramount to me. Do you not have such an issue? What's wrong with you?

I'm sorry, but you need to freshen my memory about Bush "stabbing gunowners in the back" in '91 or so. I do not know what you are talking about.

Yet, the article states that the White House is going to fight this...on the wrong side. If he does, he must pay a price politically...even if that means that an anti-gun nut job moves into his office.

Your point about expanding CCW is well taken...we're on the offensive there and winning. Why, then, do you cede defeat on this front? Because you don't own any of those nasty rifles?

Yes you did. Go buy one without a special license and fee, that is NOT required to be granted.

There's a difference between being anti-gun and not wanting people to be toting around machineguns, assault riffles, and other such guns.

And fools like you would make criminals out of people simply for wanting to own the same kind weapon that their grandfather did... for just owning a thing that might have some sentimental value, or that they are simply fascinated by, you would happily throw innocent people in jail and take away their right to vote. You're truly a champion of the rights of citizens.

First of all great post!!

5. A bayonet lug for those rare instances when out of ammo or in close quarters battle, when a spear is helpful.

This is the funniest exclusion of all. One can shoot someone from 600 yards away but they don't want you to run up there and stab them!!!

Again, your post sums it up, thanks.

Oh, no. I do! I do! I have the nicest Russian SKS with the works. It's a blast to shoot. I only have a ten-round clip, but that's only because I haven't felt the need to buy the 30-rounder (which is readily available almost anywhere). However, let's be honest. If I was hunting you, would you prefer I have my SKS with a full 30-round clip, or my 30-06 with two shells? I know which I would choose
