Bush Backs Renewing Assault Weapons Ban

The Bush administration is bucking the National Rifle Association and supporting a renewal of the assault weapons ban, set to expire just before the presidential election. "The president supports the current law, and he supports reauthorization of the current law," White House spokesman Scott McClellan told Knight Ridder.

Tossing out the ban on semiautomatic weapons is a top priority of the NRA. Bush said during his presidential campaign that he supported the ban, but it was less clear whether he would support an extension.

There's a difference between being anti-gun and not wanting people to be toting around machineguns, assault riffles, and other such guns.

It's easy to say we're going to sit back and stay home in case he signs the Bill. It's much more difficult to promise the Freepers that we're going to roll up our sleeves and get to work so the Bill never reaches his desk.

We have a lot of work to do and we don't need to fight among ourselves. That also means all of the gun groups working together.

We have it because of a few isolated, but nonetheless shocking and highly publicized, events which caused a great deal of irrational fear in voters.

Laws should NOT be made in that kind of atmosphere, but as we all know, they are and will continue to be. The PATRIOT Act, CFR, AW ban and a host of others are testimony to this quirk in our system.

It is also the reason why the Left always seems to call everything a "crisis".

Neither will I. His father lost the election because of his executive order (banning the import of these rifles); it's ironic that his son will probably lose on the exact same issue.

The parallels between the two administrations are amazing. Both had high approval ratings after just wars with righteous conclusions, and both are going to lose only because they can't be bothered to support a fundamental constitutional right. You would think someone in the administration would get a clue...

No doubt. Anyone who thinks that we can EVER just kick back and rest on our laurels is flat dumb. As we all know all too paifully, the Left NEVER does this. They are constantly at work, like ants and termites, not always visible but always destructive.

Should this law reach the President's desk, or should an event as described above occur, we will have already failed miserably. Simply put, the President cannot be put in such a position. It is literally a no-win for him.

I AM an NRA member. They are useful idiots that provide some benefits. They are certainly not enemies to the cause.
But they have a track record of selling our rights up the river, and helping some anti-rights candidates just because they are "R"s.

They should learn that you occasionally have to "shoot" one of your own that gets out of line, to keep the rest in line.
