Bush Backs Renewing Assault Weapons Ban
Washington Post ^ | April 12, 2003 | Unknown

The Bush administration is bucking the National Rifle Association and supporting a renewal of the assault weapons ban, set to expire just before the presidential election. "The president supports the current law, and he supports reauthorization of the current law," White House spokesman Scott McClellan told Knight Ridder.

Tossing out the ban on semiautomatic weapons is a top priority of the NRA. Bush said during his presidential campaign that he supported the ban, but it was less clear whether he would support an extension.

No big deal, for under $50 you can buy a kit to convert a semi-auto to full auto.

Timmy said: 'First of all, the "assault weapons ban" doesn't actually DO anything.'

It most certainly does have the effect of convincing many that prohibition of firearms to law-abiding citizens is Constitutional.

This twisted thinking has helped encourage Kalifornia to outlaw certain semi-automatic rifles completely. The Kalifornia Supreme Court has ruled that I have no right to keep and bear arms. None of this would have happened if those who have sworn to defend the Constitution had upheld their oaths.

On the day that Bush signs an extension of the "assault weapons" ban, I will register as a Libertarian and never waste another vote on a Republican.

Timmy hasn't been the same since Lassie died.

I am as you not too happy about this...even if it comes from unconfirmed sourcing.

I remember just recently Ashcroft or some other high ranking Pubbies saying they saw no need to renew this ban.

I hate the way the Conservative Movement has moved away from the base. Sure, we have plenty more members and the Dems are on the run but we've diluted our foundation more than I'd like.

If this is true...all we can do is squawk and hope W and Congress listen...the alternative is as you say....unfathomable.

Hey,...Bush has 78% approval with the country. And look at all of those Mexicans that he has welcomed into the former United States of America, who will vote for him next election. He does not care a WIT for us gun owners. As far as he is concerned, we can kiss his b***. He doesn't NEED our votes.

Bush knows so much more about everything than us common folk

He knows enough to get elected to the highest office in the nation despite all the leftists, malcontent libertarians, and one-issue charlies. He's got you beat by more than a few laps.

He's deluded beyond belief if he thinks that the majority of those Mexicans will be voting GOP.

Which would have occured if Bush had lifted Sanctions and had complied with the UN not to use force. YOU PROVE MY POINT. Thank you :-)

Only in your dreams. Bush would esaily have gotten France/UN to agree to funnel profits it his "oil buddies" in lieu of a war. If liberating Iraq qas not a motivating factor this profit split would have easily happened at the bargaining table.

You are far beyond smoking. I think you have been eating those funny mushrooms dipped in LSD. Can your condition be medically corrected or were you born this slow?

Then please explain how its not possible for us to say to France: Look, we will agree to lift the sanctions if you agree to giving our guys a healthy split. Either you get nothing after the war or you get something in the deal we propose. Everyone wins except Iraq.

Turn on the fan, it might blow out the paranoid conspiracy smoke filling your mind.

Therefore, we should vote for him. Gotta love circular logic.

So you avoid the question (I knew you would) At what percentage is the profits obscene ?

Even though all wars are economic driven it doesn't automatically mean profits are obscene.

" Obscene profits" is your term. If you cannot define just say so.

Repealing the assault weapons ban right now just isn't good politics, Bush has other things to worry about. The way to win the gun rights debate in this country is to keep pushing for CCW in new states. States that get CCW turn pro-gun. Then in a few decades the assault weapons ban will die a quiet death and few people will get very excited about it.
