[history]
SOUTH OF BAGHDAD: A scout team from the Pentagon's Defense Threat Reduction Agency arrived in a convoy Thursday at the Al-Tuwaitha nuclear complex, beginning a probe that could take weeks to determine whether plutonium is present at the massive nuclear facility and extensive underground complex.

"See, the beakers are still setting there. There are cultures growing in them. I sure don't want to go in and see what's in them. Leave that to the Army." Interesting excerpt.

>>>said they would be "surprised, but not necessarily shocked"
I suppose they were only surprised, not shocked when NK showed them the bombs they developed in the back room while the so called inspectors were outside.
These UN inspectors and inspections are worthless excercises.

You're welcome.
This is what got my eye;
Imported almost 50 kg of highly enriched uranium (HEU) from Russia and France

"everything we didn't show the inspectors", That statment right there is a "smoking gun", The Baathists were supposed to show the inspectors everything, without being asked in fact. Game set and match, although when we find out what "everything" actually consists of, that will be gravy. Gravy that glows in the dark, I'm thinking.

The article is actually kinda superficial on facts and vague if you ask me. If the former employees will 'show all', why didn't they mention _what_ they were going to show them? And what was that drivel about "UN seals"? No contextual info there, so I don't really know what the author is talking about when he refers to Marines possibly "breaking UN seals". Are some suggesting that weapons grade plutonium was known to exist there, but was sealed up by the UN; hence an erroneous Marine finding of "high levels of plutonium"? I don't get it.

It's got BIO too? Maybe just some abandoned lab coffee.

I suspect that all the weapons material and biowar weapons were taken out of the country by the fleeing weapon scientists and Ba'ath party officials. They'll sell them to terrorists or Syria or other countries.
We'll probably find evidence that WMD was produced but I don't expect to find the WMD. A continuing threat to the States and Britain.

Reactor-grade vs. weapons-grade.
I don't understand why they would need a nuclear power program at all.
If Saddam had been serious about disarming , none of this stuff would be there at all.
I can just imagine what the left will argue on this one, "hey, there's only 40% Pu-239 isotopes here, see, Saddam really isn't that bad", etc.
I think I remember reading about a recent speech Saddam gave talking about his "nuclear mujahadeen" .
Get real, there's is only reason Al-Tawaitha even exists, to set us up the bomb.

But an expert familiar with U.N. nuclear inspections told the Associated Press that it was implausible to belive that U.S. Forces had uncovered anything new at the site. Instead, the Marines apparently broke U.N. seals designed to ensure materials aren't diverted for weapons use or end up in the wrong hands.Poppy cock. Somehow I think the "expert familiar with U.N. nuclear inspections" is in major CYA mode. How does he or she know that our Marines broke the seals unless present at the facility when they went in? Something smells fishy in that comment.

My only beef with this guy's article, but it's a big beef, is that he used AP's unnamed expert. I didn't like or trust it when AP did it, and Prine shouldn't have used the non-information here.

I trust inspections done under the auspices of the 1st MEU, the 3rd ID, the 101st Airborne, and similar organizations. UN-affiliated groups need not apply.
