Mecca imam urges halt to bloodshed in Iraq after 'defeat'

RIYADH, April 11 (AFP) - The imam of Mecca's Grand Mosque, Islam's holiest shrine, called Friday for an immediate halt to bloodshed in Iraq and for Muslims not to lose faith over the "defeat."

"The bloodshed in Iraq and Palestine must stop immediately ... The killing of civilians, destruction of property, looting and robberies must all be stopped," Sheikh Abdul Rahman al-Sudais said in the televised sermon.

He urged the international community to put an end to the "ongoing war in Iraq," and warned that "wars only breed wars and aggravate a clash of civilisations."

The cleric called on Muslims to "rationally study the causes of the defeat" in Iraq, and urged them "not to lose faith that Islam will be the ultimate winner."

Sheikh Sudais also appealed for unity in Saudi Arabia, insisting that only authorized people should issue fatwas, or religious edicts.

Public sentiment in conservative Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam, has been strongly against the US-led war to end Saddam Hussein's regime.

When they see that we mean business and we follow-up on what we say with action, they will grow increasingly realistic and "peaceful".

The fool should have preached this message long ago to bin Laden and his band of cunning sadists.

What a load of crap in that one statement. He endorses Hussein's brutal regime and violence as a means of subjugating the world. These jokers haven't gotten the message yet.

The bloodshed will stop when you call off the dogs, you son of a bitch.

The cleric called on Muslims to "rationally study the causes of the defeat" in Iraq, and urged them "not to lose faith that Islam will be the ultimate winner."

OK. You know, we could easily be friends with reasonable people. In fact, we've always been friends with those who are reasonable, and friendly to us.

But since you choose to view the entire world, and the future, in necessarily adversarial terms, looking for the day when 'Islam will win' -- rather than being committed to peace and respect of others -- well, then, expect to get thrashed again and again for just as long as it takes.

At least they've toned down the usual rhetoric of death to the great satan like they usually preach on Friday.

He urged the international community to put an end to the "ongoing war in Iraq," and warned that "wars only breed wars and aggravate a clash of civilisations."

What does this mean? End the war by driving Americans out, or end the war by stopping the guerilla attacks on our soldiers and terror attacks on Iraqi civilians?

Jihadists generally last about twenty minutes around here before they commit suicide.
