Excuse me for offering a dissenting view, but just what would you have done that would have saved the employees from being tortured or killed?

Tell me you are kidding. Please?

It is not like we could not have put the heat on Iraq any time between say, 1991 and 2003, like any time in the Regime of Bill and Hillary. But CNN was so busy covering over their misdeeds, that covering over a few more misdeeds was ok. I mean in 1995 one might have dispared that the leadership of the country was such that nothing could be done. But surely, if you are CNN, you can devote your resources to ensuring that there is stronger leadership starting say, in 1996, not mind you that Viagra Bob is my idea of strong leadership, but CNN might have done something about that too. I mean it is not as though Ted Turner needed to work a second shift to feed his family.

But surely you see this, I hope, because after reading this article I have plenty of invective stored up and have some to spare for you.

I would have pulled my people out of Iraq the moment it because clear that their presence was preventing me from reporting the truth.

I got one thing to say about that!

Why, after being kicked out, did they still continue to withhold the truth until now?

Why did they not help GWB make his point, rather than oppose him at every turn? Questioning his authority and his intelligence.

I'll tell you why! It is because to do so would be to justify the war.

They can't and still won't do that! It would help Bush!

Gotten out of there if I could not report what is going on without someone getting killed or tortured!

Come home, report to CIA or Rumsfeld what I was seeing. They would not have to put it on TV which would have gotten even more killed.

That's not the difficult question you imagine it to be.

At the first sign that we were to be used as a propaganda tool, I would have had us pack our stuff up and leave. The choice between staying and telling the truth and staying and giving covered up, whitewashed views is a false choice. CNN did not have to stay.

Would some of those who had worked for us up to that point have suffered retribution? Possibly. But then, as it turns out, some of those who worked for CNN when they stayed ended up having their fingernails ripped out, being tortured, disappearing into the night and fog.

Journalistic ethics would have said "don't be part of a propaganda outlet". Humanity would have said "don't be an enabler for a criminal regime".

CLOSE THE BUREAU as soon as possible, and stop airing ANY material from it immediately.

Out of such cauldrons of difficult decisions come tested mettle and dross. We see the dross of CNN acting as if it has spawned the majestic beneficence of a $100M donation to the U.N. when most of the world will now see their turpitude.

Out of such cauldrons come people like Brit Hume who was scorched by external forces, yet chose the noble path and now soars with eagles on the leading network which was then only a twinkling in a few people's eyes.

You have not chosen wisely.
