U.S.-led forces bomb home of Saddam half-brother


AS SAYLIYA CAMP, Qatar, April 11 (Reuters) - U.S.-led forces dropped six JDAM "smart bombs" on Friday on a home west of Baghdad of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's half brother who used to head the secret police, the military said.

"The brother is a regime presidential adviser. The building was targeted with six JDAMs, in a continuing effort to degrade the Hussein regime. Battle damage assessment is ongoing," said a statement from war headquarters in the Gulf state of Qatar.

At 1:45 local time (2145 GMT) warplanes raided the building near Ramadi, some 110 km (70 miles) west of the Iraqi capital, which was a home of Barzan Ibrahim Hasan al-Tikriti.

He was the former head of the Mukhabarat intelligence service.

The news reader was reciting a communique from CentComm in Qatar. The last name of Saddam's half-brother was 'al-Tikriti' I believe. The anchor stated we were keeping surveillance on one house in particular, and I thought I heard him say we sent 6 JDAMs and the authorities are certain he is dead.

I love the 20 year warranty on the system-if it breaks or fails the manufacturer will replace it free. Doesn't it break when the bomb explodes? Does that mean the gov't will never have to buy another one? "They keep breaking every time we drop the bomb!"

The Joint Direct Attack Munition — or JDAM — is a low-cost guidance kit that converts existing unguided free-fall bombs into accurately guided "smart" weapons. The JDAM kit consists of a new tail section that contains an Inertial Navigation System/Global Positioning System.

In actual use these weapons have proved to be very accurate and highly reliable. They can be accurately delivered in virtually any weather conditions. JDAM can be launched miles from the target and safely rely on the navigation system to update the weapon all the way to impact.
